FAQ
Which Prednisolone strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Prednisolone comes as 5mg, 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablets. Packs range from 30 up to 360 tablets, depending on strength. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Prednisolone delivered to Hong Kong?
Prednisolone orders to Hong Kong go by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.
What is another name for prednisolone?
Brand names for prednisolone include Orapred, Prelone, Deltacortril, Omnacortil, Predsol and Wysolone. Prednisolone tablets are a pure generic prednisolone product and are not any of those brands.
Is prednisolone the same as prednisone?
Prednisone is turned into prednisolone by the liver, so once that happens the two behave in the same way; prednisolone is simply the form that is already active. Tablets under either name are used for the same inflammatory and allergic conditions.
Can I take ibuprofen or aspirin with prednisolone?
Ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin all belong to the NSAID group, and prednisolone irritates the stomach lining in much the same way. Together they raise the chance of a stomach ulcer or stomach bleeding, so this type of painkiller is best left alone while a course is running.
Does prednisolone raise blood sugar?
It can. Steroids make the body respond less well to insulin, so glucose readings often creep up for as long as the course lasts. People with diabetes feel this most, and the numbers normally return to their old range after the last tablet.
Why are there different prednisolone strengths?
Each figure is the amount of prednisolone in one tablet. A 5mg tablet makes small adjustments easy, and a 40mg tablet saves swallowing several smaller ones to reach a larger dose.
Does prednisolone affect sleep?
It often does at first. Lying awake or feeling wound up is a frequent complaint in the opening days, more so on higher strengths, and it tends to fade as the course continues. Taking the tablet in the morning, not late in the day, gives the effect time to wear off by bedtime.
About Prednisolone
What prednisolone tablets are used for
A flare of asthma, a bad allergic reaction, an arthritis flare, an inflamed bowel and a relapse of multiple sclerosis (an immune attack on the nerves) can all end up with the same tablet. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid, a lab-made copy of cortisol, the hormone released by the adrenal glands. It damps swelling and redness and holds the immune system back, which explains the range. Inflamed skin and eyes are further uses. After a transplant it helps stop the body rejecting the new organ, it makes up the shortfall when the body produces too little steroid of its own, and it eases some cancer symptoms.
How a course of prednisolone usually runs
Plenty of courses are a single morning dose swallowed with breakfast, a gentler start for the stomach than an empty one. The amount and the number of doses depend on what is being treated, and a course may last a few days or several months.
The end of a course matters as much as the start. After more than a few days of tablets the body's own steroid production has slowed, so a course is normally stepped down gradually rather than stopped in one go — a sudden halt can bring extreme tiredness, weakness, an upset stomach, weight loss and a craving for salt. Keep the bottle closed and away from heat and damp.
Side effects of prednisolone
Within the first week many people find they are hungrier, sleeping badly and quicker to snap. Indigestion, acne, bruises that appear easily and a rounder face come along too, and most of it clears after the last tablet. The effects that deserve attention are swollen legs or face, weak muscles, blurred vision or a painful eye, and blood pressure or blood sugar that keeps rising. Because the immune system is held back, a cold or cut can also take longer to shake off than usual.
What mixes badly with prednisolone
Painkillers in the NSAID family — ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin — irritate the stomach lining in the same way prednisolone does, and the two together make a stomach ulcer or stomach bleeding noticeably more likely. Prednisolone also pushes blood sugar up, which can work against diabetes medicines and show up as higher readings while a course lasts.
How the 5mg, 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablets differ
The number is simply how much prednisolone sits in each tablet. Small tablets let a dose be adjusted in fine steps; a 40mg tablet carries as much as eight 5mg tablets in a single swallow. Same medicine either way — the only real difference is how many tablets a dose takes.
