What you will receive

Provera is the originator brand name, made by Pfizer. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Provera.

  • The same active ingredient (Medroxyprogesterone) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Provera strengths and pack quantities are available?

You can order generic medroxyprogesterone 5mg tablets in packs of 20 to 90, and 10mg tablets in packs of 10 to 360. The pack contains generic medroxyprogesterone, not the original Provera. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Provera delivered to Hong Kong?

Generic medroxyprogesterone ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free, or the order is refunded if that is not possible.

What is another name for medroxyprogesterone?

Provera and Cycrin are brand names of medroxyprogesterone. Here, medroxyprogesterone can be bought online as generic Provera, and also as generic Cycrin and medroxyprogesterone tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.

Is Provera a contraceptive?

No. These tablets are taken to settle irregular bleeding and to restart a cycle that has stopped, not to prevent pregnancy. Medroxyprogesterone appears in contraceptives as the Depo-Provera injection, which is a different form of the same medicine.

Do I take Provera every day?

Not usually. A course is built around the monthly cycle — one tablet a day for a set number of days, then a break — rather than continuous daily use. The number of days depends on what is being treated, and the pattern is repeated each cycle while it is needed.

Can I take Provera with St John's wort?

Better not to combine them. St John's wort speeds up the liver enzymes that break medroxyprogesterone down, so the tablets clear from the body faster and work less well. Rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin and similar enzyme-inducing medicines have the same effect.

Does Provera cause weight gain?

Weight change is one of the possible effects, and it can go either way — some women put on weight, others lose it. Tender breasts, spotting between periods, acne and changes in the pattern of bleeding are also common while the tablets are being taken.

About Provera

A progestin for bleeding that will not settle

Medroxyprogesterone is a progestin, a lab-made version of the progesterone the body produces after ovulation. In these tablets its main work is to slow the build-up of the lining of the uterus (womb) so that the lining sheds in a more orderly way. Provera is taken for abnormal uterine bleeding — periods that are heavy, drawn out or arrive between cycles — and for amenorrhoea, where periods have stopped for six months or more in someone who used to menstruate normally. Women who take oestrogen for menopausal symptoms also take medroxyprogesterone to stop the womb lining thickening, which lowers the risk of cancer of that lining.

Choosing between the 5mg and 10mg packs

The tablets are 5mg and 10mg. Courses are usually built around the monthly cycle rather than taken every day without a break: one tablet a day for a set number of days, at about the same time on the days you take it. Swallow them with water. Miss one and you can take it as soon as you think of it; when the next dose is nearly due, wait and keep to the pattern instead of taking two at once. Packs hold 20 to 90 tablets of the 5mg strength and 10 to 360 of the 10mg.

What it can cause

Tender breasts, changes in menstrual flow and spotting between periods are common, along with acne, extra facial hair, thinning scalp hair, trouble sleeping or daytime drowsiness, an upset stomach and weight change in either direction.

Blood clots are the serious risk to watch for. Pain, swelling, warmth, redness or tenderness in one leg only needs urgent treatment, as do sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, a fast or pounding heartbeat and coughing up blood. Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, slow or difficult speech, or sudden dizziness and fainting point to a stroke and are also urgent. Sudden loss or change of vision, double vision and bulging eyes need the same. Yellowing of the skin or eyes points to the liver. Medicines that speed up liver enzymes — rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John's wort — clear medroxyprogesterone from the body faster and can make it work less well.

Provera, Cycrin and medroxyprogesterone

Cycrin and the plain medroxyprogesterone tablets hold the same medicine at the same 5mg and 10mg strengths; the difference between the three is the brand name on the box. Cycrin is used for amenorrhoea and endometrial hyperplasia (a thickened womb lining), while plain medroxyprogesterone is used for endometriosis and hormone replacement. The medroxyprogesterone ingredient page goes through the whole range.
