Rybelsus is the daily tablet form of semaglutide, and the listing here is generic semaglutide in 3mg, 7mg and 14mg strengths. Semaglutide copies GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone the gut releases after eating. In the body it prompts the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high, reduces the sugar the liver puts out, and slows the stomach so meals leave it more gradually. It is licensed for adults with type 2 diabetes, together with diet and exercise.
Many people on semaglutide also notice less appetite and lose some weight. That is a known effect of the ingredient, not what the tablets are licensed for, and the amount varies widely.
Taking Rybelsus and moving up the strengths
Take one tablet a day, first thing, on an empty stomach, swallowed whole with a small sip of plain water. Then leave at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or other tablets, or less of it is absorbed. Treatment starts at 3mg for a month, which gets the body used to the drug and is not meant to control blood sugar on its own. It then moves to 7mg, and to 14mg after another month or more if 7mg is not enough. Leave tablets in their blister until you take them and store them at room temperature.
Side effects and interactions
Nausea is the one most people meet, usually when starting or stepping up a strength, along with diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, stomach ache and a smaller appetite. Severe pain across the upper stomach that spreads to the back can mean pancreatitis, and needs urgent attention. Vomiting and diarrhoea can dry you out enough to strain the kidneys. With insulin or a sulfonylurea (another diabetes tablet), blood sugar can drop too low. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN 2, should not take semaglutide. It also raises the amount of levothyroxine in the blood.
