What you will receive

Serc is the originator brand name, made by Viatris. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Serc.

  • The same active ingredient (Betahistine) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Serc strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Serc comes as 8mg, 16mg or 24mg tablets, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180. It is generic betahistine, not the original Serc. Larger packs cost less per tablet. Choose the strength and pack that suit you.

How does Serc delivery to Hong Kong handle missing parcels?

For Serc tablets, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days and includes online tracking. If your parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, it is sent again free. If that is not possible, the order is refunded. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging.

What is another name for betahistine?

Serc and Betaserc are brand names of betahistine, which is also sold as Betavert and Vertin. Here, betahistine can be bought online as generic Serc. These are generics, not the original brand.

What does Serc 16 mean?

It means each tablet holds 16mg of betahistine. The shop also sells 8mg and 24mg. All three are the same medicine, so the strength only changes how much is in one tablet and how many tablets make up the day.

Should Serc be taken with food?

Ideally yes, with a meal or straight after one, because that reduces the chance of an upset stomach. Nothing else about food matters: you can eat and drink as normal, including histamine-rich foods, without affecting how Serc works.

Can I take Serc with antihistamines?

Hay-fever tablets such as cetirizine or loratadine block histamine. Betahistine imitates it. Taken together they work against each other, and Serc may do less.

What if I miss a dose of Serc?

Missed one at midday? Take it late if the next dose is still a few hours off. If the next one is close, leave the missed tablet and go on as normal. Doubling up is not the fix.

About Serc

Serc 8mg, 16mg or 24mg for vertigo and Ménière's disease

Serc 16 is a 16mg tablet of generic betahistine; 8mg and 24mg are the other two sizes sold here. It is the standard tablet for Ménière's disease, an inner-ear condition with spells of spinning vertigo, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss and nausea, and it is also used for vertigo that starts in the balance organs of the inner ear.

Picture the room spinning when you turn over in bed. Betahistine will not stop an attack once it has started. What it is for is the next one: taken regularly, it is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear and ease the pressure there, so attacks come less often and hit less hard. It can take a while to show.

Taking Serc

Three tablets a day is the usual pattern, six to eight hours apart, each swallowed with water during or just after a meal so the stomach stays quiet. Strength only changes how many tablets that takes: 8mg for smaller steps, 24mg for fewer tablets. Eating and drinking are otherwise unrestricted, and driving is not usually affected.

No fridge is needed; a dry shelf out of the sun will do.

What to expect and what to watch for

Nausea, indigestion or a headache are the usual complaints, and they are mild. A swollen tongue or throat, a raised itchy rash or trouble breathing is different: that is an allergic reaction and needs urgent treatment.

Betahistine is used with care in people with asthma or a stomach ulcer, and it is not used in people with phaeochromocytoma (a rare adrenal gland tumour) or an allergy to it. It is not normally taken in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Antihistamines for hay fever can reduce its effect, and it is not combined with MAOI antidepressants.

The betahistine page explains how the tablet strength relates to the salt and what to expect from treatment for Ménière's disease over the longer term.
