FAQ

Which Spironolactone strengths and pack sizes are available?

Spironolactone tablets come in 25mg and 100mg, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360 tablets. Each page lists the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars, and the bigger packs bring the price per tablet down.

How do I pay for Spironolactone and how discreet is the parcel?

You can pay for Spironolactone by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted page, or with Bitcoin or Ethereum. Card details never reach the shop's servers. Orders ship in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents.

What is another name for spironolactone?

Brand names for spironolactone include Aldactone and Verospiron. Spironolactone tablets are a pure generic spironolactone product and are not any of those brands. Here, spironolactone can also be bought online as generic Aldactone.

How long does spironolactone take to work?

It can take about two weeks or longer before the full effect shows, so swelling and blood pressure may not change straight away. Spironolactone keeps fluid build-up, heart failure and high blood pressure under control rather than curing them, and it carries on working for as long as you take it.

Is spironolactone the same as Aldactone?

Yes. Aldactone is a brand name for spironolactone, and both come as 25mg and 100mg tablets. The active ingredient is the same, so the difference is the name on the pack. Some people know the medicine by one name, others by the other.

Can I take ibuprofen with spironolactone?

Regular ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin-type painkillers can work against spironolactone: they may blunt its effect on blood pressure, and they add to the potassium it holds in the body. Paracetamol does not interact in that way, so it is the usual choice for an occasional headache or strain.

Does spironolactone cause breast tenderness?

Breast pain and an increase in breast size are among the common side effects, and they affect men as well as women. They are a known effect of the medicine itself rather than a sign of a separate problem in the breast.

Does spironolactone make you pee more?

It does. It is a water tablet, and the extra urine is fluid your body was holding on to. Dizziness is a common side effect, and it is often linked to losing that fluid.

About Spironolactone

What spironolactone tablets are for

Spironolactone is a diuretic, one of the medicines often called water tablets. It is used when the body holds on to more fluid than it should — the kind that gathers as swelling in the ankles, feet and legs (oedema). Heart failure and high blood pressure that has not come down with other medicines are the other main reasons people take it. It also has a place in hyperaldosteronism, where the body makes too much aldosterone (a hormone that governs salt and water), and in low potassium levels. Some women take it for excess facial hair. Both strengths, 25mg and 100mg, are tablets.

How it works

Aldosterone tells the kidneys to hold on to sodium and water and to let potassium go. Spironolactone blocks that signal, so more water and sodium leave the body in the urine while the potassium stays. With less fluid in the bloodstream, the pressure inside the vessels drops and the heart has less to push against. That is what "potassium-sparing" means, and it is the main way this water tablet differs from loop diuretics such as furosemide, which flush potassium out.

Taking it, and what not to mix with it

Take spironolactone once or twice a day, with a meal or just after one, at about the same time each day. Store the tablets somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.

Potassium is the thing to watch. Supplements and salt substitutes made with potassium chloride add to what the medicine already holds in, and regular painkillers of the ibuprofen and naproxen type can both blunt its effect on blood pressure and push potassium higher. Eplerenone, a close relative of spironolactone, is not taken with it.

Side effects worth knowing

Dizziness, nausea, muscle or leg cramps, tiredness, and breast pain or enlargement are the common ones; breast changes turn up in men too. More serious but rare: potassium rising too high, which shows as muscle weakness, numbness or an irregular heartbeat; kidney trouble; liver trouble, with yellowing of the eyes and skin. A swollen throat or tongue, an itchy raised rash with breathing difficulty, or blistering skin around the lips needs emergency treatment.

Spironolactone or Aldactone?

Same medicine, two names: Aldactone is the brand name and spironolactone the generic one, and each comes as 25mg and 100mg tablets. If you want the pack with the brand name on it, Aldactone is here; the ingredient itself is set out on the spironolactone page.
