FAQ
Which Tamoxifen strengths and pack sizes are available?
Tamoxifen tablets come in 10mg and 20mg, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. Each page lists the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars, and the bigger packs reduce the price per tablet compared with the smaller ones.
What happens if my Tamoxifen parcel goes missing?
If a Tamoxifen parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or turns up damaged, we send it again free of charge. Where that is not possible, the order is refunded. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels, each in plain, unbranded packaging.
What is another name for tamoxifen?
Brand names for tamoxifen include Nolvadex and Soltamox. Tamoxifen tablets are a pure generic tamoxifen product and are not any of those brands. Here, tamoxifen can also be bought online as generic Nolvadex.
How long do people usually take Tamoxifen?
For hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, tamoxifen is usually taken for five years, and some people continue for ten. The length depends on the reason it was started and the stage of the cancer. It works by lowering the chance of the cancer coming back over the long term.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Tamoxifen?
Many people drink alcohol in moderation while on tamoxifen. There is no specific interaction between the two, but heavy drinking raises the risk of blood clots on its own and can make hot flushes worse. Cutting back is a sensible move if flushes are troublesome.
What is the difference between Tamoxifen and Nolvadex?
They contain the same active ingredient, tamoxifen. Nolvadex is a brand name for it and comes as 10mg and 20mg tablets, like this page. Only the name on the pack differs, not the medicine inside.
Does Tamoxifen affect periods?
Tamoxifen can make periods irregular, lighter or heavier, and they may stop altogether. It is not a contraceptive, so a separate method is needed if pregnancy is possible. Periods often return after treatment ends.
Can Tamoxifen cause weight gain?
Some people gain weight on tamoxifen, though not everyone does. Fluid retention, a bigger appetite and changes in body fat can all play a part. A balanced diet and regular activity help, but the change is often mild.
About Tamoxifen
What Tamoxifen is for
Tamoxifen is a hormonal treatment for breast cancer. It belongs to a group called selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). In the breast, it attaches to the same receptors that oestrogen uses and blocks the hormone from getting there. That can slow or stop the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells. It is also used to lower the chance of breast cancer in women at high risk, and to treat an early form called ductal carcinoma in situ. Treatment usually runs for years, not weeks.
Fitting it into the day
Most people take their tamoxifen tablet at the same time each day, often with breakfast or before bed. The 10mg and 20mg tablets are swallowed whole with water, and food makes no difference to how they work. If you forget one, take it later that day if you remember; if the next dose is almost due, leave the missed one and continue as usual. Do not take two to catch up. Keep the tablets in their original pack, somewhere dry and away from direct heat.
Side effects
Hot flushes and night sweats are common, as are vaginal dryness or discharge, irregular periods, tiredness, nausea, a rash and changes in weight. These often ease with time. Tamoxifen also raises the risk of blood clots in the leg or lung, and of stroke. Swelling or pain in a leg, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, or weakness on one side of the body needs urgent treatment. Less often, tamoxifen can cause endometrial cancer, which may first show as unusual vaginal bleeding, and it can affect the liver and the eyes.
Interactions and who should avoid it
Pregnancy and breastfeeding rule tamoxifen out, since it can harm the baby. It strengthens the effect of warfarin, so the two together need careful dose adjustment. Paroxetine, fluoxetine and bupropion can blunt tamoxifen's action, and St John's wort can lower how much of it reaches the body.
Tamoxifen or Nolvadex?
Both contain the same active ingredient, tamoxifen, and both come as 10mg and 20mg tablets. Nolvadex is the brand name, so the difference is the name on the pack. If you prefer the brand, Nolvadex is the option here. The Tamoxifen page explains the ingredient and all its tablet strengths.
