FAQ
Which Toprol strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Toprol tablets come as 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. Packs hold 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360 tablets. It is generic metoprolol, not the original Toprol. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Toprol delivered to Hong Kong?
For a long course of Toprol, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging. If a parcel goes missing, it is sent again free or refunded.
What is another name for metoprolol?
Toprol, Lopressor, Seloken and Beloc are brand names of metoprolol, which is also sold as Betaloc, Metohexal and Selozok. Here, metoprolol can be bought online as generic Toprol, and also as generic Beloc. These are generics, not the original brand.
What is the difference between Toprol and Toprol XL?
They contain the same medicine, metoprolol, but release it differently. Toprol is a standard tablet taken once or twice a day. Toprol XL is the extended-release version, built to let metoprolol out slowly so one dose covers a full day; both are sold in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
How long does Toprol take to work?
Most people see the first lower readings on a home monitor within days, though the tablet only reaches its full effect after several weeks of steady use. Chest pain on exertion tends to ease earlier, since the heart is asking less of its own oxygen supply. Stopping the tablets lets pressure and symptoms drift back.
Can I drink alcohol with Toprol?
Alcohol adds to the blood-pressure drop metoprolol causes, so dizziness and light-headedness are more likely, particularly when you stand up quickly. A single drink with a meal is unlikely to be a problem; several drinks in an evening can leave you feeling faint.
Can I stop taking Toprol suddenly?
No — stopping suddenly can bring angina back and push blood pressure up. Instead the dose is stepped down over one to two weeks, so it is worth having the lower strengths to hand before the taper starts.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Toprol?
Take the tablet when you notice, as long as it is still the same day. Once the next one is almost due, forget the missed tablet and go back to your usual times; two together would push your pulse and pressure lower than intended.
About Toprol
What Toprol tablets are for
Toprol is a brand of metoprolol, one of the beta-blockers. Metoprolol damps down the adrenaline signals that reach the heart, so beats come slower and with less force. Blood pressure falls, the heart uses less oxygen, and that is what makes it useful in high blood pressure, angina (chest pain brought on by exertion or stress), heart failure and some irregular heart rhythms, and after a heart attack. It works over days rather than minutes, which is why it is taken as a long-term medicine rather than for a quick fix.
Strengths and daily routine
The tablets come in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg and are swallowed with water, once or twice daily depending on the plan, straight after food. Doses that fall at regular hours keep the amount of medicine in the body even from one day to the next. A dry spot away from heat suits the pack.
Side effects worth knowing
The first week or two often brings headaches, feeling sick, tiredness and dizziness, along with cold hands and feet and a pulse that feels slower than usual; sleep can be disturbed too. Most of this settles as the body adjusts. Less common but more serious: a pulse so slow that you faint, new or worsening breathlessness, and ankles or feet that swell. People with diabetes should know that metoprolol can mask the first warning signs of a low sugar reading, a pounding heart for example, and it may make wheezing worse in asthma.
Alcohol, other medicines and stopping
Alcohol lowers blood pressure further, so light-headedness is easier to trigger. Other blood pressure medicines pile on the same effect, and medicines such as verapamil, diltiazem, digoxin and amiodarone can slow the heart more. Some antidepressants (fluoxetine and paroxetine are examples) let metoprolol build up in the body. Coming off metoprolol in one go is a bad idea: angina can return and heart attacks have followed sudden stops, so a dose is normally tailed off over a week or two.
Other metoprolol tablets
Two other metoprolol tablets are sold here. Toprol XL releases the medicine slowly so one tablet covers the day, and it is stocked in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. Beloc, sold as 20mg and 40mg tablets, is another metoprolol brand. Toprol itself is the ordinary tablet, 25mg to 100mg, taken once or twice daily. All of them sit together on the metoprolol page.
