FAQ

How many bottles of Tropicamide 1% can I order?

Tropicamide comes as 1% bottles in quantities of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Each page shows the price per bottle in Hong Kong dollars, and larger quantities lower the price per bottle.

How is Tropicamide delivered to Hong Kong?

Two ways: tracked courier, 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail, 14 to 21 business days without tracking. Either way the parcel is plain, with no branding.

Which brand names does tropicamide have?

A brand name for tropicamide is Mydriacyl. Tropicamide bottles are a pure generic tropicamide product and are not that brand. Here, tropicamide can also be bought online as generic Mydriacyl.

How long does tropicamide keep the pupil dilated?

Most people are back to normal after 4 to 8 hours, and some need a full day. The pupil starts to open 15 to 20 minutes after the drop, and reading is the last thing to come back.

Can I drive after tropicamide drops?

Not straight away. The glare from oncoming lights and the haze up close can both be bad while the drop is active, and nobody can say in advance exactly how long that will be. Book a lift home, or take a taxi, and drive tomorrow if the blur has not cleared.

Can I wear contact lenses with tropicamide?

Take them out first. A lens on the eye soaks up some of the drop and keeps it from spreading across the surface, so the pupil may open unevenly. Pack your glasses for the trip home and put the lenses back once reading looks normal again.

Is tropicamide the same as Mydriacyl?

Yes. Mydriacyl is a brand name for tropicamide, and both come as a 1% solution in a bottle. What separates the two listings is the name on the bottle rather than the medicine inside.

Does tropicamide blur your vision?

For a few hours, yes. The drop relaxes the focusing muscle as well as widening the pupil, so reading and close screen work look soft until the effect fades. Distance vision is usually less affected, though bright light can still dazzle.

About Tropicamide

Why the pupil is widened

An examiner can see very little of the retina through a narrow pupil, which is the whole reason for this drop. Tropicamide 1% opens the pupil wide, giving a clear view of the retina and the optic disc (where the optic nerve leaves the eye). It does this by relaxing the small muscle that holds the iris in. The muscle that focuses the lens is quietened as well, so near objects look soft for a few hours. After that the medicine washes out and both muscles go back to normal.

How the drops are used

A drop goes into the eye being examined, or one into each eye, shortly before the examination starts. Lenses should come out first, because a contact lens resting on the surface holds the solution against the eye. After the drop, press gently at the inner corner, where the lid meets the nose, for a couple of minutes; that slows the drainage which would otherwise carry the medicine away. Full widening takes about 15 to 20 minutes, so the examination follows soon after.

The hours that follow

Expect to squint for a while. Daylight feels harsh, and a phone or a page is hard to focus on until the pupil narrows again, which for most people takes 4 to 8 hours and for a few takes up to 24. Wear sunglasses outside, and leave driving or machinery until your sight is sharp. Cap the bottle after each use and keep it out of strong light.

What side effects can the drops cause?

A moment of stinging when the drop lands is usual. Some people also get a headache, a dry mouth, or nausea and vomiting. Serious reactions are rare: confusion, unusual behaviour and difficulty breathing, mostly in children. Sudden severe eye pain or a rapid change in vision after the drops needs urgent treatment.

What this listing is

This is the 1% solution in a bottle, and orders can be placed in quantities of one to five. Mydriacyl holds the same active ingredient at the same strength under a brand name, so the two listings differ only by label.
