FAQ

What strengths and pack sizes of Ursodeoxycholic Acid can I order?

Ursodeoxycholic Acid comes as 300mg tablets in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Ursodeoxycholic Acid shipped to Hong Kong?

Ursodeoxycholic Acid orders to Hong Kong use tracked courier, taking 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail, taking 14 to 21 business days and untracked. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.

What is another name for ursodeoxycholic acid?

Brand names for ursodeoxycholic acid include Actigall, Urso, Udiliv and Ursofalk. Ursodeoxycholic acid tablets are a pure generic ursodeoxycholic acid product and are not any of those brands. Here, ursodeoxycholic acid can also be bought online as generic Urso and ursodiol tablets.

How long does ursodeoxycholic acid take to work?

It works slowly. In primary biliary cholangitis the aim is to hold back damage to the bile ducts over months and years, so the effect shows up in liver blood tests rather than in how you feel within a few days. Gallstone dissolution, when it happens, usually takes many months of steady daily dosing.

Can ursodeoxycholic acid dissolve any gallstone?

No. It works on small cholesterol stones in a gallbladder that still fills and empties, and it has no effect on pigment stones or large stones that have hardened with calcium. Even when a stone does dissolve, stones can return later, so some people still end up needing surgery.

Can I take ursodeoxycholic acid with other medicines?

Cholestyramine and colestipol, which lower cholesterol by binding bile acids in the gut, also bind ursodeoxycholic acid and cut how much of it you absorb. Antacids containing aluminium have the same effect. Take them at least two hours away from your dose of ursodeoxycholic acid.

How long will I need to take ursodeoxycholic acid?

For primary biliary cholangitis it is a long-term medicine — years rather than weeks — because the condition itself is lifelong. For gallstones the course usually runs for many months, with scans showing whether the stone is shrinking.

About Ursodeoxycholic Acid

What the 300mg tablets are used for

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid — one of the substances your liver makes to help digest fat. As a medicine it is used mainly for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a long-term liver disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the small ducts that carry bile out of the liver. Bile then builds up and damages liver tissue. Taken every day, the tablets slow that damage, and treatment usually continues for years.

The other main use is dissolving cholesterol gallstones in people who cannot have surgery. It is also given to prevent new stones forming when someone loses weight quickly.

How it works inside the liver and gallbladder

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a gentler, more water-friendly bile acid than the ones the body produces. Taken regularly, it takes the place of some of the harsher acids in the pool that circulates between the liver and the gut, so liver cells meet a less irritating mix. Bile drains more freely, and cholesterol in the gallbladder is less likely to settle out as crystals that grow into stones.

Taking ursodeoxycholic acid day to day

Take the tablets whole, with water, two or three times a day. The total for the day is set by body weight, so someone heavier takes more tablets than someone lighter. Results come slowly. Liver blood tests are what show the benefit, usually after months, and you can feel perfectly well in the meantime, so a good day is no reason to stop. If you miss a dose, take it later the same day, but skip it when the next one is nearly due.

Side effects and other medicines

Where side effects appear, they are mostly softer stools or a slightly sick feeling, and these tend to fade within the first weeks. Severe stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, or a rash with a swollen face are a different matter and need urgent attention.

Some medicines should not be taken at the same time as your tablets: cholestyramine and colestipol, and antacids containing aluminium. They bind ursodeoxycholic acid in the gut, so less of it gets absorbed. Leave at least two hours between them and your dose.

The medicine is not used when the bile ducts are completely blocked, when the gallbladder has stopped working, or when the stones are large and hardened with calcium — those will not dissolve.
