Vibramycin contains doxycycline, an antibiotic in the tetracycline family. It is used for bacterial infections — chest infections, urinary tract infections, gum infections, some sexually transmitted infections — and for skin conditions including acne and rosacea. It can also prevent malaria in travellers. Doxycycline slips inside bacteria and blocks the machinery they use to build proteins, so they stop multiplying and the body clears what is left. Colds and flu are viral, so it does nothing for them.

Swallowing it without trouble

Doxycycline has a name for sticking in the gullet, and the burn it leaves behind is unpleasant. Take the tablet in the morning or at a meal with a full glass of water, and don't go back to bed for half an hour. The dose is 100mg once or twice a day.

Dairy is the other catch. Milk, yoghurt, cheese, antacids and calcium, iron or magnesium supplements all bind doxycycline, so less of it gets into the blood. Put about two hours between any of those and the tablet. And keep going until the pack or course is done; infections that were only half cleared tend to return.

Side effects to expect

Feeling sick, vomiting, headache and a rash turn up most often, and they usually settle. Doxycycline also makes skin burn faster in sunlight, so cover up or use a sunscreen on bright days. A severe allergic reaction — swelling of the tongue or throat, a raised itchy rash, difficulty breathing — needs urgent treatment.
