What you will receive

Xalatan 0.005% is the originator brand name, made by Pfizer. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Xalatan 0.005%.

  • The same active ingredient (Latanoprost) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Can I buy Xalatan 0.005% by the bottle?

Yes, Xalatan 0.005% comes as 2.5ml bottles of generic latanoprost, in packs of 1, 3 or 5. The pack contains generic latanoprost, not the original Xalatan 0.005%. Larger packs cost less per bottle.

How are Xalatan 0.005% bottles delivered to Hong Kong?

Each order travels in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Tracked courier is 5 to 9 business days with online tracking; standard airmail is 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked. A parcel that arrives damaged is sent again free.

Does Xalatan have other names?

Xalatan is a brand name of latanoprost, which is also sold as Monopost. Here, latanoprost can be bought online as generic Xalatan. These are generics, not the original brand.

Can I wear contact lenses while using Xalatan?

Not while a dose is going in. Take the lenses out first, instil the drop, and wait about 15 minutes before putting them back — a lens left in place can trap the drop against the eye surface rather than letting it spread.

Does Xalatan cure glaucoma?

No — it holds eye pressure down for as long as you keep using it, and the pressure drifts back up when the drops stop. Sight the optic nerve has already lost stays lost. Treating glaucoma is a long-term arrangement, not a course with an end date.

Can I use Xalatan in just one eye?

Yes, and one-sided use is common. The drop goes only into the eye or eyes being treated, so there is no need to put anything in the other eye. The routine is unchanged: a single drop in each treated eye every evening.

What does 0.005% mean on the bottle?

It is the concentration of the medicine. Every millilitre of the solution contains 50 micrograms of latanoprost. This is the standard strength for latanoprost eye drops, so a 2.5ml bottle reads 0.005% whether it arrives on its own or in a pack of three or five.

How does Xalatan compare with timolol eye drops?

They lower pressure by different means. Latanoprost widens the eye's drainage channels, while timolol slows the amount of fluid the eye produces. Timolol is usually instilled twice a day and can slow the heart rate; latanoprost is a single evening drop.

About Xalatan 0.005%

What the drops do for the eye

These drops are for glaucoma and ocular hypertension (eye pressure above the normal range). Pressure that stays high wears down the optic nerve, the bundle of fibres that carries sight signals to the brain, and lost sight does not return. The drops cannot repair that damage; they keep the pressure down so it does not get worse. Because raised pressure causes no symptoms, they are used on days when your eyes feel perfectly normal too.

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analogue: a laboratory version of a signal the body already uses. Its work is on the outflow side — the fluid made inside the eye drains through channels that latanoprost helps widen, so the fluid leaves more freely and the pressure falls. Fluid production is not switched off.

Dosing, and putting a drop in

One drop into each eye that needs treating, once daily, in the evening. Extra drops do not bring the pressure down further and can blunt the effect, so the single evening dose is the one to keep.

Wash your hands, tilt your head back, draw the lower lid away to form a pocket, and let the drop fall in, keeping the bottle tip clear of your eye, lashes and fingers. Close the eye for a minute afterwards. Should you also use a different eye drop, wait five minutes before the second one so it does not rinse the first away.

A forgotten dose is best left; take the next one as usual the following evening rather than adding a second drop.

Side effects worth knowing

A sting, a burn or an itch as the drop goes in is the usual complaint. Eyes that feel dry or gritty between doses are common too, and now and then there is a headache or a touch of dizziness.

Over months, the iris (the coloured ring of the eye) of a treated eye can turn browner, most visibly if it started out blue, green or hazel. Lashes on that side may come in longer, thicker and darker. Neither change harms the eye, but you cannot count on either reversing once the drops stop.

A sudden change in eyesight, painful sensitivity to light, or swelling of the eye or lid needs urgent treatment.

The bottle you get

Xalatan 0.005% comes as a 2.5ml dropper bottle of generic latanoprost; you can buy one bottle or a pack of three or five.

Keep an unopened bottle in the fridge. Once you have started it, the bottle can stay out of the fridge for roughly six weeks — cap on, out of direct sun and away from warm spots.

Latanoprost covers the ingredient in more depth, and Eye Care collects the shop's other eye treatments.
