What you will receive

Yasmin is the originator brand name, made by Bayer. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Yasmin.

  • The same active ingredient (Drospirenone / Ethinylestradiol) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which pack sizes of Yasmin can I order?

Yasmin tablets come as generic drospirenone + ethinyl estradiol in one strength, 3/0.03mg, in packs of 63, 84, 126, 189 or 252. It is generic drospirenone + ethinyl estradiol, not the original Yasmin. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

Is Yasmin delivered discreetly to Hong Kong?

Every Yasmin order ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked.

What is another name for drospirenone and ethinylestradiol?

Yasmin is a brand name of drospirenone and ethinylestradiol, which are also sold as Yaz. Here, drospirenone and ethinylestradiol can be bought online as generic Yasmin. These are generics, not the original brand.

How long does Yasmin take to work?

Protection starts with the first tablet when you begin on day one of your period. Begin on any other day and the first seven days of that cycle are not covered, so use condoms or another method until the eighth day.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Yasmin?

Alcohol does not stop the hormones working, so an occasional drink is not a problem. A heavy session that leaves you vomiting within a few hours of your tablet is different: that dose may not have been absorbed, so treat it like a missed tablet and use a backup method for the next seven days.

Does Yasmin clear up acne?

It can. Moderate acne is one of its uses, for women who also want contraception, because drospirenone blunts the androgens that make skin oily. Expect a gradual change over the first few cycles, not a clear face in the first week.

What happens during the seven tablet-free days?

A withdrawal bleed, which is not a true period, usually starts on day two or three of the gap. The gap itself is covered as long as the 21 tablets before it were all taken. The next pack or cycle starts on day eight.

What does 3/0.03mg mean on a Yasmin pack?

Each tablet holds 3mg of drospirenone and 0.03mg of ethinyl estradiol. The figures are the same in all 21 tablets of a cycle, so there is nothing to adjust from one day to the next.

About Yasmin

What the tablets are for

Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive: drospirenone (a progestin) with ethinyl estradiol (an oestrogen), 3/0.03mg in each tablet. Taken daily it stops the ovaries releasing an egg and thickens the mucus at the entrance to the womb, so sperm have a harder time getting through. It also keeps the womb lining thin, which is why the bleed in the tablet-free days tends to be lighter and more regular than a natural period.

Drospirenone acts partly like spironolactone, working against androgen (male-hormone) activity and helping the body let go of a little excess fluid. That is why the same combination is chosen for moderate acne and for cycle complaints such as bloating and tender breasts, in women who also want contraception.

Taking it, and the tablet-free week

Swallow one tablet with water at a fixed time each day. Food makes no difference; timing does. A cycle is 21 tablets followed by seven days with no tablet, during which a withdrawal bleed normally arrives two or three days in. Start the next cycle on the eighth day, whether or not bleeding has stopped.

Starting on the first day of a period gives protection from the first tablet; a Sunday start needs condoms or another method for the first seven days.

A single missed tablet is easy to put right: take it as soon as you remember and carry on with the pack. Two or more missed in a row, or vomiting or diarrhoea within a few hours of a dose, means the hormones may not have been absorbed; use a backup method for the next seven days.

Side effects

Nausea, headaches, tender breasts, low mood and spotting between periods are common in the first two or three cycles and usually settle down.

Clots are the serious risk with any pill containing oestrogen, and smoking pushes that risk up, especially after the age of 35. A painful, swollen calf, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, a severe headache unlike your usual one, sudden vision changes, numbness or weakness on one side, or trouble speaking all need urgent treatment.

Drospirenone can raise blood potassium, so potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics and frequent NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen deserve care. Rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin and St John's wort can clear the hormones faster and make the pill less dependable.

Packs and ordering

There is one strength, 3/0.03mg, in packs of 63, 84, 126, 189 or 252 tablets. A cycle uses 21 tablets, so 63 is three cycles and 252 covers roughly a year. Yasmin is the brand name for this pair of hormones; the tablets sold here are generic drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol at the same strength.
