How olanzapine works
Dopamine and serotonin are chemical messengers that carry signals between nerve cells. In schizophrenia and mania, parts of that signalling run too hot. Olanzapine damps it down, so hallucinations, disordered thinking and agitated mood ease over time — days and weeks rather than hours.
Fitting one tablet into your day
Most people take a single dose daily. Olanzapine often makes you drowsy at first, which is why an evening dose suits many people. Food makes no difference, so with breakfast or between meals both work; the useful habit is taking it at the same point in the day. Swallow the tablet with water. If a dose slips your mind, take it when you remember, as long as the next one is not due soon — never take two at once to catch up.
Side effects, common and serious
Drowsiness in the first week or two is the usual complaint, often with a dry mouth, constipation and a bigger appetite.
