Esomeprazole tablets in 20mg and 40mg: an acid-reducing proton pump inhibitor for reflux, heartburn and peptic ulcers, ordered under its plain ingredient name.
Acid comes from tiny pumps in the stomach lining. Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, binds to them and shuts them off, and the lining has to grow new ones before acid output recovers. That is why one tablet a day is enough, and why the benefit builds over the first few days. Chemically it is the S-isomer of omeprazole, one of two mirror-image halves of that molecule; the omeprazole page covers its sibling.
If acid keeps rising into your food pipe, which is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, esomeprazole is a standard answer, along with the heartburn that comes with it. It also heals erosive oesophagitis, damage to the food pipe lining caused by that acid, and helps stop it coming back. Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum are another use, and where the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is involved it is taken with antibiotics. People who must take anti-inflammatory painkillers long term use it to protect the stomach. Rarest of all is Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a tumour-related condition with extreme acid output.
Pick Esomeprazole if you want the ingredient's plain name, or Nexium if that is the name you know; the Nexium listing is generic esomeprazole. Each comes in 20mg and 40mg. 20mg is what people usually start with for reflux and heartburn. 40mg is for oesophagitis and some ulcer courses.
Swallow one tablet whole with water, about an hour before a meal. Chewing it would wreck the coating that gets it past stomach acid. For oesophagitis a course often runs four to eight weeks. Keep the pack somewhere dry and not too warm.
Most people notice nothing, or a headache, an upset stomach, wind or a dry mouth. Over a year or more, low magnesium (cramps, an irregular pulse), low vitamin B12 and a higher risk of bone fractures are possible, and acid suppression makes some gut infections easier to catch, including Clostridioides difficile, which shows up as watery diarrhoea that persists. Esomeprazole cuts the effect of the antiplatelet clopidogrel, and it lowers the absorption of drugs that need stomach acid, among them ketoconazole, itraconazole and iron tablets. Methotrexate levels can rise. Severe skin reactions are rare.

Nexium is a brand name of esomeprazole, which is also sold as Esoz and Nexpro. Here, esomeprazole can be bought online as generic Nexium and esomeprazole tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
Not in any simple sense. Esomeprazole is one mirror-image half of the omeprazole molecule, and both shut down the same acid pumps. The dose matters more than the name: 20mg and 40mg tablets suit different problems.
Most people take it in the morning, about an hour before breakfast, because the pumps are most active once food arrives. Take it at the same time every day, with water, and swallow the tablet whole.
For reflux or oesophagitis, courses of four to eight weeks are common, and some people continue longer for ongoing symptoms. Long use can lower magnesium and vitamin B12, so it is taken for as long as the condition needs, not by default.
There is no direct interaction between esomeprazole and alcohol, but alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and make reflux worse, working against the tablet.
