Omeprazole was the first proton pump inhibitor and is still the best-known name among them. It reduces the acid your stomach makes by blocking the pumps in the stomach lining that release it. Heartburn, a sour taste, acid regurgitation and ulcer pain are the problems people search it for, and it is also used to heal oesophagitis (a sore, inflamed food pipe), to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and with antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes many ulcers.
Two tablet listings are stocked, each in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg: Omeprazole and Prilosec, which is generic omeprazole under the brand name. Three strengths give you room to match the dose to the job. The 10mg tablet is the lowest, and a common step for ongoing, lower-dose control. 20mg is the standard strength for reflux and ulcer healing. 40mg is the top strength on offer. If you are weighing it against a close relative, esomeprazole is the single-isomer version of the same molecule.
Once a day, in the morning, before eating, swallowed whole with water; tablets are delayed-release and do not suit crushing or chewing. Heartburn does not vanish on the first dose, and the full effect arrives after a few days. Short courses of two to four weeks are usual for heartburn and ulcers; oesophagitis can take longer. Store at room temperature, away from damp.
Most people get away with an occasional headache or a bit of wind. Some have stomach pain, nausea, or loose or hard stools. Take it for a long stretch and magnesium can fall, which shows up as muscle twitching or an uneven heartbeat; vitamin B12 can fall too, leaving you tired. Watery diarrhoea that will not clear, a blistering rash or a swollen face and lips are not normal and need prompt action.
Omeprazole slows down how the liver clears several drugs. It weakens clopidogrel, a blood thinner given after stents and heart attacks, so that pairing is generally avoided. It can raise diazepam, phenytoin and warfarin levels, and it lowers the absorption of HIV protease inhibitors, iron and some antifungals, because they need acid to be absorbed. High-dose methotrexate may build up. St John's wort can reduce omeprazole levels.

Prilosec is a brand name of omeprazole, which is also sold as Lomac, Losec, Ocid, Omez and Risek. Here, omeprazole can be bought online as generic Prilosec and omeprazole tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
Morning is standard, taken before breakfast. Omeprazole shuts off the pumps that are active when you eat, so a dose before the first meal works best. A second daily dose, if one is used, goes before the evening meal.
10mg is the lowest strength, often used for lighter or ongoing control. 20mg is the usual strength for reflux and ulcers, and 40mg is the highest on offer, used for more severe or stubborn cases.
Prilosec is a brand name for omeprazole. In the shop, the Prilosec listing is generic omeprazole in the same 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablets as the plain Omeprazole listing.
Omeprazole starts to lower acid within an hour of a dose, but its full effect builds over one to four days of daily use. For quick relief of sudden heartburn it is slower than an antacid.
