What Prilosec is used for
Prilosec is the brand name for omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor — a medicine that turns down the pumps in the stomach lining that release acid. With less acid around, heartburn eases and irritated tissue in the food pipe and stomach can heal. It is used for acid reflux and recurring heartburn, for reflux oesophagitis (damage to the food pipe caused by acid), for stomach and duodenal ulcers, and alongside antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium behind many ulcers. The tablets are delayed-release, so the coating carries the medicine past the stomach before it dissolves, and they come in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg.
Taking Prilosec: half an hour before breakfast
Frequent heartburn is what this tablet is for, but it is a slow starter. One tablet half an hour before the first meal, at the same time daily, builds its full effect over 1 to 4 days; it will not put out a sudden flare. Swallow it whole with water. The coating exists to get the omeprazole past stomach acid intact, and a chewed or split tablet loses that.
What side effects to expect
Headache, diarrhoea or constipation, wind, stomach pain and nausea are the ones people report most, and they usually settle. Serious reactions are uncommon: a spreading rash with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat and difficulty breathing is an emergency. Blistering skin reactions and kidney inflammation are rare but serious. Long courses have been linked with low magnesium and low vitamin B12, which blood tests can pick up.

Omeprazole changes how the body clears a few other medicines. Clopidogrel, methotrexate and antifungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole are the ones that come up most.
