What you will receive
Advair Diskus is the originator brand name, made by GlaxoSmithKline. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Advair Diskus.
- The same active ingredient (Fluticasone / Salmeterol) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Advair Diskus strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Advair Diskus inhalers come in 100/50mcg, 250/50mcg and 500/50mcg, in packs of 1, 2 or 3. This is generic salmeterol + fluticasone, not the original Advair Diskus. Larger packs cost less per inhaler.
What arrives when I order Advair Diskus to Hong Kong?
Advair Diskus inhalers to Hong Kong arrive in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. If an inhaler parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, the order is refunded.
What are the alternative names for Advair Diskus?
Advair and Viani are brand names of fluticasone and salmeterol, which are also sold as Seretide. Here, fluticasone and salmeterol can be bought online as generic Advair Diskus, and also as Seroflo Inhaler and fluticasone and salmeterol inhalers. These are generics, not the original brand.
What does 250/50mcg mean on an Advair Diskus?
The first figure is the fluticasone dose and the second is the salmeterol dose delivered with each inhalation. Salmeterol stays at 50mcg in all three versions, so the 100/50mcg, 250/50mcg and 500/50mcg inhalers differ only in how much steroid a puff carries.
How long does Advair Diskus take to work?
Salmeterol can ease breathing within the first day. Fluticasone is slower, taking a couple of weeks or more to reach its full effect on airway swelling, so judge the inhaler over several weeks of regular twice-daily use, not by one dose.
What is the difference between Advair Diskus and Advair Rotahaler?
Both hold fluticasone and salmeterol as a dry powder. The Diskus is pre-loaded and you slide a lever to ready each dose, with no capsules to handle; the Rotahaler works with capsules placed in a separate device. Strengths differ as well: the Diskus comes as 100/50, 250/50 and 500/50mcg.
Why does Advair Diskus cause a sore throat or hoarse voice?
Part of the powder lands in the mouth and throat instead of the lungs, and the steroid there can irritate the lining or let yeast grow, giving hoarseness, a sore throat or thrush. Rinsing with water, gargling and spitting after every dose clears it and is the main way to keep the risk down.
Can I use a reliever inhaler with Advair Diskus?
Yes. Many people carry a reliever such as salbutamol alongside the Diskus. The Diskus is the twice-daily preventer; the reliever is for a sudden bout of wheeze or tightness. A reliever puff in between does not shift the timing of your next Diskus dose.
About Advair Diskus
Asthma and COPD, and what each puff does
Asthma, and COPD (a long-term lung condition behind chronic bronchitis and emphysema), both narrow the airways and leave them inflamed, and the Diskus works on both halves of that. Salmeterol keeps the muscle lining the airways slack so air passes more freely; fluticasone calms the swelling and irritation underneath. A long-acting beta2 agonist used by itself in asthma raises the risk of a severe attack, which is why it belongs in the same device as a steroid. Sudden wheezing or tightness is a job for a quick-acting reliever — this one is the daily preventer.
Taking a dose
The Diskus is used twice a day, morning and evening, about 12 hours apart. To take a dose, slide the lever until it stops, which readies one dose, breathe out away from the mouthpiece, seal your lips around it and take one steady, deep breath in, then hold it for a few seconds. Rinse your mouth with water and spit, because inhaled steroid left behind encourages thrush. The counter on top shows the doses left; at zero the device is finished, and since the last doses may come out short it should be replaced instead of pushed on. Close the cover after each use and keep the device dry.
Effects worth knowing about
A sore or hoarse throat, cough, headache and mouth irritation are the usual local complaints, and salmeterol can bring tremor, cramp and a racing pulse. Thrush in the mouth and throat is the one that rinsing prevents. People with COPD on an inhaled steroid seem to pick up more chest infections, pneumonia included. Years of higher-dose treatment can weaken bones, affect the eyes and reduce the body's natural cortisol production. Rarely, the chest tightens right after a dose instead of opening up, and that reaction is an emergency. Ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and similar drugs let fluticasone build up in the body; beta-blockers work against salmeterol; two long-acting beta2 agonists should not be combined.
Advair Diskus or another salmeterol inhaler?
Three other listings carry the same pair. Advair Rotahaler holds powder in capsules that a small device pierces; there is a plain-named Fluticasone + Salmeterol in 250/50mcg and 500/50mcg; and the aerosol Seroflo Inhaler, whose label puts the salmeterol figure first. The Diskus is the lever-and-counter device, and the steroid step is the only thing that changes between its three strengths.
