FAQ
What pack sizes does Allopurinol come in?
Allopurinol comes as 300mg tablets in packs of 30, 60 or 90. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How discreet is Allopurinol delivery to Hong Kong?
Allopurinol ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels. If a parcel goes missing within the delivery window, it is sent again free or refunded.
Which brand names does allopurinol have?
Brand names for allopurinol include Zyloprim, Milurit, Zyloric and Purinol. Allopurinol tablets are a pure generic allopurinol product and are not any of those brands. Here, allopurinol can also be bought online as generic Zyloprim.
How long does allopurinol take to work?
It can be several months before the full benefit shows, and uric acid levels are usually checked in the meantime to see whether the amount needs changing. Gout attacks can become more frequent in the first few weeks, which is expected rather than a sign the tablets are failing.
Can I take allopurinol during a gout attack?
It will not ease an attack that has already started — anti-inflammatories and colchicine are what settle a flare. If you are already taking allopurinol, the usual approach is to carry on with it and treat the attack separately.
Can I drink alcohol with allopurinol?
Alcohol, beer especially, pushes uric acid up and makes attacks more likely, so heavy drinking works against the tablet. Allopurinol can also make you sleepy, and alcohol adds to that, so keep it light on days you need to drive or concentrate.
What's the difference between Allopurinol and Zyloprim?
Nothing in the medicine — Zyloprim is the branded version of allopurinol, and both contain the same active ingredient. Zyloprim comes as 100mg and 300mg tablets, while the allopurinol on this page is 300mg only, which matters if a dose is being adjusted in small steps.
About Allopurinol
If gout keeps coming back
Gout is a form of arthritis in which uric acid, a waste product the body makes, forms crystals inside a joint. The result is a sudden attack of redness, swelling, pain and heat, often in a big toe or knee. Allopurinol slows xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that produces uric acid, so less of it circulates and fewer crystals form. It is taken for gout, for uric acid kidney stones that keep returning, and for the high uric acid that comes with tumour breakdown during chemotherapy for certain cancers. What it will not do is settle a joint that is already inflamed.
A tablet with a meal, and plenty of water
Allopurinol 300mg is a tablet you swallow whole with a drink, once or twice a day, ideally after a meal and at a regular time you will remember. Doses are usually started low and built up in steps over weeks, so the amount you begin on may not be the amount you stay on. Expect months, not days: the effect on attacks builds slowly, and some people get more attacks in the early weeks before things settle. Keep going once you feel well. Aim for around eight glasses of fluid a day, which keeps uric acid diluted in the urine. Allopurinol makes some people drowsy, so see how it affects you before driving or using machinery.
Side effects: the ordinary ones, and the rare serious ones
Nausea, loose stools and sleepiness are the effects people most often notice, and they tend to ease. The rare problem worth knowing about starts as a rash or itching and can move on to blistering or peeling skin, red or purple spots, fever or flu-like symptoms, swelling of the lips or mouth, sore eyes, blood in the urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop the tablets and get urgent help if any of that appears.
Medicines that don't sit well with it
Azathioprine and mercaptopurine, used after organ transplants and for some cancers and inflammatory conditions, are cleared by the same enzyme allopurinol blocks, so their levels climb sharply and the dose is normally cut to a fraction. Amoxicillin and ampicillin are worth a mention too: rashes are more common alongside allopurinol.
Allopurinol or Zyloprim?
Zyloprim is allopurinol under a brand name, made as 100mg and 300mg tablets. The allopurinol sold here is the 300mg tablet only, in packs of 30, 60 or 90; the 100mg size is the one used when a dose is edged up or down in finer steps. Same medicine either way — what changes is the name on the pack and the strengths on offer. See allopurinol for the medicine itself, or Zyloprim for the branded tablets.
