FAQ
What pack sizes does Aromasin 25mg come in?
Aromasin 25mg tablets come in packs of 30, 60, 90 or 120. This is generic exemestane, not the original Aromasin. Each page shows price per tablet in HKD, and larger packs cost less per tablet.
How can I pay for Aromasin and what delivery options are there?
You can pay for Aromasin by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted payment page, or Bitcoin/Ethereum. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, while standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, and is untracked.
Do other medicines affect exemestane?
Yes. Rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine and St John's wort speed up the liver enzymes that break exemestane down, leaving less of the medicine in the body. St John's wort is the one people often take without thinking of it as a medicine.
How does exemestane differ from tamoxifen?
Both are hormone treatments for breast cancer, but they work differently. Tamoxifen blocks oestrogen from reaching cancer cells, while exemestane cuts the amount of oestrogen the body makes. That is why exemestane is used after the menopause while tamoxifen works at any age.
Does exemestane cause bone loss?
Yes. Exemestane lowers oestrogen, and oestrogen is one of the things that keeps bone strong, so bone density can drop over a long course and fractures become more likely. There is no pain to warn you, which is why bone strength is checked from time to time.
Does exemestane cause hair loss?
Hair thinning is a recognised side effect of exemestane and affects some women who take it. It is usually a gradual thinning rather than the complete hair loss that comes with some chemotherapy.
About Aromasin
What Aromasin is used for
Aromasin tablets contain exemestane 25mg, a hormone treatment for breast cancer in women who have passed the menopause. Some breast cancers grow faster when oestrogen is around. Exemestane lowers the amount of oestrogen the body makes, which takes away that stimulus. It is used after surgery for early breast cancer, often following two to three years on tamoxifen, and also for advanced breast cancer that has progressed despite other hormone treatment. Every tablet in the pack is 25mg.
How exemestane lowers oestrogen
Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase is the enzyme that turns androgens — weaker hormones the body also makes — into oestrogen. Exemestane fits into the enzyme and blocks it for good, so the same molecule cannot be used again. After the menopause the ovaries stop being the main source of oestrogen; most of what is left is made this way, in fat, muscle and other tissue. That is why the effect is much greater after the menopause, and why the tablets are not used in pregnancy or in women who still have periods. Oestrogen-containing medicines, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT), work against exemestane, so the two are not used together. Exemestane is the steroidal member of this family; anastrozole and letrozole are non-steroidal and attach to the enzyme differently.
How is Aromasin taken?
Aromasin is a once-a-day tablet. The 25mg tablet is swallowed with water after a meal, and breakfast or the evening meal both work provided it is the same meal each day, which keeps the blood level steady. A tablet forgotten in the morning can still be taken later that day.
Side effects worth knowing
Low oestrogen produces menopause-type symptoms. Hot flushes and night sweats are the usual start, with aching joints and muscles, tiredness, broken sleep, headaches and nausea for some women, and plenty find these ease after the first few months. Bones are the longer concern, because lower oestrogen thins them over the years, and liver blood tests can shift. Hives, or swollen lips or tongue together with breathing trouble, mean an allergic reaction, and that is an emergency.
Keeping the pack
Store the strips dry, below 30°C and out of direct sun, and read the expiry date on the box before starting a new one.
