What you will receive

Aygestin is the originator brand name, made by Warner Chilcott. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Aygestin.

  • The same active ingredient (Norethindrone Acetate) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

What pack sizes does Aygestin 5mg come in?

Aygestin 5mg tablets come in packs of 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180. This is generic norethindrone acetate, not the original Aygestin. Each page shows price per tablet in HKD, and larger packs cost less per tablet.

How discreet is Aygestin delivery to Hong Kong?

Aygestin ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, you receive a refund.

What is another name for norethindrone acetate?

Aygestin is a brand name of norethindrone acetate, which is also sold as Regestrone. Here, norethindrone acetate can be bought online as generic Aygestin. These are generics, not the original brand.

Is Aygestin a contraceptive pill?

No, it is not a birth-control pill. The 5mg tablet is for endometriosis, stopped periods and abnormal bleeding, while a contraceptive pill is a separate product with a far smaller daily dose of progestin, taken every day to prevent pregnancy.

How long does a course of Aygestin last?

Weeks for a bleeding problem, months for endometriosis. A short course is typical when the aim is to control bleeding or bring on a missed period, whereas endometriosis treatment can run much longer and be repeated, with the length set by how symptoms respond.

Does Aygestin stop your period?

Often. Flow usually gets lighter within the first weeks and may stop completely while you are on the tablets. Some women still get spotting or a light bleed, particularly at the start; that is normal and does not mean the dose has failed.

Can I drink alcohol with Aygestin?

Alcohol does not stop the tablets working, but it can add to headaches, nausea, dizziness and low mood, which this progestin already causes in some people. If the first weeks leave you feeling flat or queasy, cutting back on drinking makes a noticeable difference.

Do antibiotics affect Aygestin?

Rifampicin and rifabutin are the only antibiotics that matter here — both are tuberculosis drugs, and both make norethindrone acetate clear from the body faster, so the tablets may work less well. Penicillins, macrolides, tetracyclines and other everyday antibiotics do not interfere with Aygestin.

About Aygestin

What Aygestin treats

Aygestin 5mg tablets are norethindrone acetate, a progestin — a lab-made version of progesterone, the hormone behind the monthly build-up and shedding of the womb lining. What is sold here is the generic form rather than the original branded product, and 5mg is the strength on offer.

Three conditions bring people to it. Endometriosis, where patches of tissue resembling the womb lining settle outside the uterus and cause pelvic pain with heavy, painful periods. Secondary amenorrhoea, where the monthly bleed has stopped and pregnancy is not the reason. Abnormal uterine bleeding, meaning bleeding that is heavier, longer or more irregular than it should be.

How norethindrone acetate works

A progestin stops the womb lining from building up the way it normally does. With less tissue to shed, bleeding becomes lighter, and in endometriosis the same action calms the patches outside the uterus and eases the pain they cause.

What to expect once you start

Tablets are swallowed with a drink of water. A course may run for a few days or for several months, depending on the reason it was started. Bleeding usually lightens within the first cycle, and some women find it stops altogether while they are taking the tablets. Spotting between doses is common in the early weeks.

When the tablets stop, a bleed normally follows within a few days. That is expected — and when the aim was to bring on a missed period, it is the whole point of the course.

Side effects worth knowing

Headache, nausea, tender breasts, bloating and low mood top the list; acne, spotting and tiredness are also common. Most of these settle as the body gets used to the tablets.

Clotting is a rare but serious risk with hormonal tablets of this kind. Swelling or pain in one leg, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, or a sudden loss of vision needs urgent treatment.

Other medicines, packs and storage

Some medicines push norethindrone acetate through the body faster, so the tablets may not work as well. The ones that matter are rifampicin and rifabutin, used for tuberculosis; carbamazepine and phenytoin, used for epilepsy; and St John's wort.

Packs come in 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 tablets. A short course needs only the smallest, while months of treatment are easier to manage with a larger pack. Keep the blister somewhere cool and out of sunlight.
