FAQ
Which azithromycin strengths can I order?
Azithromycin tablets come in 250mg, 500mg and 1000mg, in packs from 20 to 360 tablets. Each page lists the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars, and larger packs cost less per tablet.
Can I cancel my azithromycin order?
Yes, for 24 hours, as long as it has not left yet. After that you can follow it on the tracking page; the tracked courier usually needs 5 to 9 business days. Live chat runs 24/7, in English or Cantonese.
What are the other names for azithromycin?
Brand names for azithromycin include Zithromax, Azee, Azikind, Azithral and Zmax. Azithromycin tablets are a pure generic azithromycin product and are not any of those brands. Here, azithromycin can also be bought online as generic Zithromax.
How long does azithromycin stay in your system?
Longer than the course itself. Azithromycin clears slowly, and traces stay in tissue for several days after the last tablet, so it keeps working against the infection after you finish.
What is azithromycin 1000mg used for?
The 1000mg strength is the one used when a single dose is the whole course, for example in uncomplicated chlamydia. It is a higher-strength tablet of the same medicine rather than a different drug.
Can I take azithromycin with food?
Yes. Food makes no difference to whether azithromycin works, so choose whichever is easier. A meal can take the edge off nausea or stomach upset if that bothers you.
Can azithromycin treat a cold or flu?
No. Colds and flu come from viruses, and azithromycin acts only on bacteria. It becomes relevant when a bacterial infection, such as a throat, chest or ear infection, is the cause.
About Azithromycin
Azithromycin 250mg, 500mg and 1000mg tablets
Azithromycin is the antibiotic people usually remember for its short courses. These tablets come in three strengths, 250mg, 500mg and 1000mg, and the packs run from 20 tablets up to 360, so a single course or a stock for repeat use are both covered.
What it is used for
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It treats bacterial infections of the chest (including pneumonia and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis), throat and tonsils, ears, sinuses and skin, and it is a standard treatment for chlamydia. It does not work on colds, flu or any other virus, which is worth knowing because it is often bought for a cough that turns out to be viral.
Inside the bacteria it blocks the step where proteins are assembled, which stops them growing. The drug also lingers in tissues, which is why some courses last only a few days and, with the 1000mg strength, a few infections are treated with one dose.
How to take it
One tablet a day, and food makes no difference to whether it works. Pick a time that suits you and stick to it. If your stomach complains, have it with a meal. Finish the course even after you feel better.
Aluminium or magnesium antacids interfere with absorption, so leave a gap of a couple of hours between them and the tablet.
Side effects
Diarrhoea, loose stools, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps lead the list, followed by headache and dizziness. In rare cases azithromycin alters the heart's rhythm, so palpitations or fainting need prompt attention, as do a swollen face, widespread rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or diarrhoea that turns watery and severe.
Brand-name versions
Zithromax carries the same ingredient, with a 100mg strength added to 250mg, 500mg and 1000mg, and Zithromax Dispersible is a 100mg tablet. The ingredient page, azithromycin, covers all three listings.
