FAQ
Which Chloroquine strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Chloroquine comes as 250mg and 500mg tablets. Packs run from 30 to 360 tablets for both strengths. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Chloroquine delivered to Hong Kong?
Chloroquine can go by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, it is sent again free or the order is refunded.
What are the other names for chloroquine?
Brand names for chloroquine include Aralen, Avloclor, Lariago and Nivaquine. Chloroquine tablets are a pure generic chloroquine product and are not any of those brands. Here, chloroquine can also be bought online as generic Aralen.
Does chloroquine work in every malaria area?
No. In large parts of Africa, Asia and South America the parasite has become resistant, so chloroquine is only dependable in areas where it still responds, such as parts of Central America and the Caribbean. Check your route before you rely on it.
How long before a trip should I start chloroquine?
Start one to two weeks before you reach a malaria area, take it on the same day each week while you are there, and keep going for four weeks after you leave. Missing the after-trip weeks is a common mistake.
Can I take chloroquine with antacids?
Not close together. Antacids and kaolin reduce how much chloroquine the body absorbs, so take them at least four hours apart. A glass of milk or a snack is a better way to settle a queasy stomach.
Is chloroquine the same as hydroxychloroquine?
They are related but not identical: hydroxychloroquine has an extra hydroxyl group in its molecule, and the two are sold as separate medicines in different tablet strengths. This listing is chloroquine phosphate.
About Chloroquine
Chloroquine for malaria
Planning a trip? Check the destination first. Chloroquine-resistant malaria is widespread, so this tablet only suits places where the parasite still responds to it, and many tropical regions need a different antimalarial. Where it does work, one tablet a week protects a traveller, and a short course treats an attack. It has been in use for decades. Chloroquine also treats amoebic liver abscess, when the amoeba behind dysentery has spread to the liver.
The tablets here hold chloroquine phosphate, in 250mg and 500mg. Inside the parasite, chloroquine builds up in the compartment where it digests haemoglobin from red blood cells and stops it disposing of a toxic by-product, so the parasite poisons itself.
How chloroquine is taken
Take tablets with food or a glass of milk, which settles the stomach. For prevention, the usual pattern is to start one to two weeks before arriving, take one dose on the same day every week, and carry on for four weeks after leaving the area. Treatment of an attack is a short course with a larger first dose, set out on the pack. Antacids and kaolin (an anti-diarrhoea remedy) stop chloroquine being absorbed, so leave at least four hours between them. Keep the tablets dry, at room temperature.
A few tablets are dangerous to a small child. Keep the pack out of reach.
Side effects
Nausea, stomach cramps, headache, dizziness and itching are the common ones, and blurred vision can come on briefly. The serious ones are less frequent: damage to the retina after long use (trouble reading, missing patches in vision, colours looking different), a change in heart rhythm, low blood sugar, muscle weakness, seizures, mood or behaviour changes, and a blistering rash. Chloroquine can also set off a flare of psoriasis and make epilepsy harder to control.
Other medicines that change heart rhythm, such as some antibiotics and antipsychotics, add to the rhythm risk. Mefloquine raises the chance of seizures. Insulin and diabetes tablets can drive blood sugar lower. Ciclosporin and digoxin levels may rise.
Choosing strength and pack
The 250mg tablet is the smaller one; 500mg is the larger. Both come in packs of 30 up to 360, so a weekly prevention schedule or a longer trip is easy to cover. For other medicines against parasites, see the antiparasitics category.
