FAQ

What Doxepin strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Doxepin comes as tablets in 10mg, 25mg and 75mg. The 10mg packs range from 30 to 180 tablets, while 25mg and 75mg packs range from 30 to 360. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Doxepin delivered to Hong Kong?

Doxepin orders to Hong Kong can use tracked courier, taking 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Standard airmail is untracked and takes 14 to 21 business days, 30 at most. Every parcel ships in plain, unbranded packaging. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.

Which brand names does doxepin have?

Brand names for doxepin include Sinequan, Silenor and Zonalon. Doxepin tablets are a pure generic doxepin product and are not any of those brands.

How long does doxepin take to work?

Sleep is usually the first thing to change, often within a night or two of starting. Mood is slower: the antidepressant effect builds over two to four weeks, and some people notice the full benefit after six weeks. A dose taken in the evening is easier to live with than a morning one, because of the sedation.

Can I drink alcohol with doxepin?

Alcohol slows the same brain signals doxepin already damps down, so one drink can hit harder than it would otherwise: more drowsiness, poorer coordination, and a bigger drop in blood pressure when you stand up. The effect is strongest in the first weeks and after any increase in dose.

Which doxepin strength is used for sleep?

The 10mg and 25mg tablets are the ones taken at night for insomnia, where the sedative effect is what is wanted. The 75mg tablet fits the larger daily amounts used for depression, which are often divided into a bigger evening dose and a smaller daytime one.

Does doxepin help with itching?

It can. Doxepin is a strong antihistamine, and a doxepin cream is used on itchy eczema. The tablets have also been used for widespread itching that keeps people awake, though the strengths here — 10mg, 25mg and 75mg — are mainly for depression and insomnia.

Can I take doxepin with an antihistamine?

Both dry you out, so together they are more likely to leave you with a dry mouth, constipation and trouble passing urine, and older people may feel muddled. Antihistamines also add to the drowsiness. A non-drowsy antihistamine for hay fever or hives sits more comfortably alongside it.

About Doxepin

What doxepin tablets are for

Doxepin is one of the older antidepressants, a tricyclic. It is used for depression — lifting low mood and settling the broken sleep that usually comes with it. The same tablets are also used for insomnia on their own: at the low end of the range the drowsiness is the point, and people who wake in the night often do well on a small dose taken before bed. Strengths are 10mg, 25mg and 75mg.

How it works

Two chemical messengers in the brain, serotonin and norepinephrine, carry signals between nerve cells and are involved in mood. Doxepin keeps more of both available, which is what helps depression over time. It also blocks histamine, the same signal allergy medicines target, and that is why it makes you sleepy; blocking acetylcholine is behind the dry mouth and constipation. One ingredient, two very different jobs.

Taking doxepin

Take the tablets with water, and expect to feel heavy-eyed afterwards. That is why bedtime is the usual slot, and for insomnia a single small tablet then is the whole routine. For depression the daily total is larger, so it is often divided: some in the morning or afternoon, the rest at night. A few nights are enough to see sleep change; mood follows later. Cutting doxepin off in one go can cause headache, nausea and restless nights, so the amount comes down in steps.

Side effects

Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, trouble passing urine, sweating and weight gain are the ones people notice most; they tend to settle after a week or two. Standing up quickly can bring a moment of dizziness, especially first thing in the morning.

A few effects are more serious. An irregular or very fast heartbeat, a seizure, or fever with rigid muscles and confusion need urgent treatment. Confusion and falls are more of a risk in older people.

What to avoid

Alcohol adds to the drowsiness and the dizziness on standing. Sleeping tablets, opioid painkillers and other sedatives deepen the same effect. Doxepin is not combined with an MAOI antidepressant — the pair can push blood pressure and body temperature up sharply — and other serotonin-boosting medicines raise the risk of the fever-and-rigid-muscles reaction. Antihistamines and bladder medicines that dry you out add to doxepin's own anticholinergic effects, and cimetidine or some antifungal medicines can push doxepin levels higher than expected.

Keep the tablets in their blister or bottle, out of heat and bright light.
