Dutas is a once-daily capsule for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urine flow slow, weak or frequent. BPH is not prostate cancer, although both can cause urinary symptoms. The active ingredient is dutasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme that makes dihydrotestosterone (DHT) out of testosterone, and DHT is the hormone behind prostate growth. With less DHT, the prostate can shrink over time, easing pressure on the urethra and helping the bladder empty.
Taking the capsule
Each Dutas capsule contains 0.5mg dutasteride. Swallow it whole with water; do not open, chew or crush it. Food makes little difference to how it is absorbed, and a regular daily slot keeps the level steady. Symptoms often begin to improve after about three months, and the full benefit can take six months or longer. BPH is not cured, so the capsule is taken long term.
Side effects
Sexual effects are the most common: trouble getting or keeping an erection, lower sex drive, and problems with ejaculation. Some men also notice breast tenderness or enlargement. Urgent help is needed for a reaction that swells the lips, face or throat, makes breathing or swallowing hard, or causes the skin to blister and peel. Dutasteride can also raise the chance of high-grade prostate cancer, a faster-growing type.
Storage and practical points
Keep the capsules in their original container with the lid firmly shut, on a dry shelf away from radiators or direct sun. Do not handle damaged or leaking capsules; the contents can pass through skin. Pregnant women, and women who might be, should keep their hands off them. Cimetidine, a heartburn medicine, can interact with dutasteride. Do not donate blood while taking Dutas and for six months after the last capsule.
