FAQ
Which Fluticasone + Salmeterol strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Fluticasone + Salmeterol comes as 250/50mcg and 500/50mcg inhalers in packs of 1, 2 or 3. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Fluticasone + Salmeterol delivered to Hong Kong?
You can choose tracked courier, which takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail, which takes 14 to 21 business days and is untracked. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free.
What is another name for fluticasone and salmeterol?
Brand names for fluticasone and salmeterol include Advair, Viani and Seretide. Fluticasone and salmeterol inhalers are a pure generic fluticasone and salmeterol product and are not any of those brands. Here, fluticasone and salmeterol can also be bought online as generic Advair Diskus and Seroflo Inhaler.
How long does Fluticasone + Salmeterol take to work?
Breathing often eases within the first day, while the fluticasone side works on airway swelling over two weeks or longer. That is why the inhaler is judged over weeks of regular use rather than after a few doses.
Why do I need to rinse my mouth after using it?
Fluticasone is a steroid, and powder left in the mouth or throat can encourage thrush — white patches that may be sore — or a hoarse voice. Rinsing with water and spitting it out clears that residue; do not swallow the water.
Can I use a spacer with this inhaler?
With a pressurised metered-dose inhaler, a spacer slows the spray and helps more of the medicine reach the lungs, so it is often used. Dry powder devices such as Advair Diskus, and capsule devices, are used without one and need a quick, deep breath instead.
Does the inhaler contain lactose?
Lactose is often used as the carrier powder in dry powder inhalers, in amounts small enough that lactose intolerance is rarely an issue. A milk allergy is a different matter, so it is worth checking what the particular device contains.
About Fluticasone + Salmeterol
What Fluticasone + Salmeterol is for
Fluticasone + Salmeterol is an inhaler for two long-term lung conditions. One is asthma that a reliever inhaler alone does not control; the other is COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), the lasting airway damage usually linked to smoking. It has two parts. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that reduces swelling and irritation in the airways. Salmeterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the airway muscle and keeps the tubes open for about half a day.
Because it is maintenance treatment, it is no help once an attack is under way; breathing that suddenly tightens calls for a fast-acting reliever inhaler.
How to use the inhaler
One inhalation morning and evening, about 12 hours apart, at the same times each day. Afterwards, swill water round your mouth and spit it out. That clears steroid left in the throat, which lowers the chance of a sore throat or thrush.
Breathing may ease within the first day, but the effect on swelling builds over two weeks or longer, so keep going when breathing feels fine.
Keep the device dry, out of direct sun and away from radiators, with the cap on between doses. Do not puncture or burn a canister. Each inhaler holds a set number of doses; puffs after that may not carry the full amount.
Side effects and interactions
A sore or irritated throat, a hoarse voice, headache, shaky hands, a fast or pounding heartbeat and coughing are common. White patches in the mouth or throat mean thrush; the rinse-and-spit habit is what keeps it away.
Breathing that gets worse straight after a dose needs urgent help, as does a rash with swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Salmeterol has been linked to a higher chance of severe asthma episodes in people with asthma, which is why it is used with a steroid rather than alone.
Beta-blockers for blood pressure or the heart, such as propranolol, can work against salmeterol, and strong antifungals such as ketoconazole or HIV medicines such as ritonavir can raise fluticasone levels in the body.
Other fluticasone and salmeterol products
This one is an inhaler in 250/50mcg and 500/50mcg. The same two ingredients also come as Advair Diskus, a dry powder inhaler in 100/50, 250/50 and 500/50mcg, and as Advair Rotahaler, capsules that go into a device and are pierced before you breathe in. Seroflo Inhaler pairs 25mcg of salmeterol with 125mcg or 250mcg of fluticasone. Brand, device and strength range are what differ.
