FAQ

Which Imdur strengths and pack sizes are available?

Imdur tablets come as 20mg, 30mg, 40mg and 60mg. Packs run from 30 to 360 tablets depending on strength. This is generic isosorbide mononitrate, not the original Imdur. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

Can I cancel an Imdur order before dispatch to Hong Kong?

Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat. A parcel that does not arrive within the delivery window is sent again free or refunded.

What is another name for isosorbide mononitrate?

Imdur and Monoket are brand names of isosorbide mononitrate, which is also sold as Ismo. Here, isosorbide mononitrate can be bought online as generic Imdur. These are generics, not the original brand.

How long does Imdur take to work?

You will not feel it working. The sign is that angina attacks come less often and ease sooner, and that builds over days and weeks of taking one tablet every morning.

Can I drink alcohol with Imdur?

Alcohol opens blood vessels in much the same way the tablet does, so the two together lower blood pressure more than either would alone. A small drink is unlikely to matter much, but several drinks in an evening can leave you flushed, light-headed and unsteady.

Is isosorbide mononitrate the same as nitroglycerin?

They belong to the same nitrate family and both widen blood vessels, but they are used quite differently. Nitroglycerin is short-acting and kept for an attack that has already started, while isosorbide mononitrate is a long-acting tablet taken once a day to keep attacks from coming.

Why does Imdur cause headaches?

The headache comes from the nitrate widening blood vessels in the head, the same action that eases the workload on the heart. It is usually at its worst over the first few days and then eases off as the body adapts to the medicine. Some people barely notice it.

Can Imdur be taken with other blood pressure medicines?

Many people do take it with other blood pressure tablets. Their effects add together, so blood pressure can fall lower than with either alone. The usual sign is feeling giddy when you get up from a chair.

About Imdur

What Imdur tablets are for

Imdur is a once-a-day tablet for people whose angina keeps coming back: the chest pressure that turns up on a flight of stairs, in a cold wind or after a heavy meal because part of the heart muscle is short of oxygen. Taken every morning, it makes those episodes rarer and lets you get further before one starts.

It is not a rescue tablet. For an attack that has already begun you need a fast-acting nitrate dissolved under the tongue; a swallowed Imdur will not stop it.

How the nitrate works

Inside the body, isosorbide mononitrate is converted to nitric oxide, a signal that makes the muscle in blood vessel walls relax. The veins open most, so less blood returns to the heart and it has less to push against. The arteries feeding the heart widen a little as well, which lets the heart take on more effort before it runs short of oxygen. "Prolonged-release" describes the tablet, not the drug: it dissolves slowly and spreads one dose over the day.

One tablet in the morning

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water in the morning, keeping to the same hour every day. Chewing, crushing or splitting it lets the drug out too quickly and defeats the slow release. The once-a-day rhythm also leaves a long stretch overnight when nitrate levels fall, which is how the tablets keep working rather than fading with constant exposure.

What you may notice

Expect a headache in the first few days; it fades as the body settles. Getting up quickly from a chair can leave you dizzy or flushed, and a few people feel sick. A faint, or a pulse that races or turns irregular, means blood pressure has fallen too far.

Alcohol adds to that fall, so a heavy night leaves you unsteady. Never combine Imdur with sildenafil, tadalafil or similar erectile-dysfunction medicines: together they can send blood pressure dangerously low.

Strengths and storage

Imdur comes as 20mg, 30mg, 40mg and 60mg prolonged-release tablets. Keep them in the pack, away from heat, damp and strong light.
