FAQ
Which Indocin strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Indocin comes as capsules in 25mg, 50mg and 75mg. Packs range from 30 to 360 capsules for each strength. It is generic indomethacin, not the original Indocin. Larger packs cost less per capsule.
Can a large Indocin order be split for delivery?
For Indocin, very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels. Each parcel ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking; standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, untracked.
What other names is indomethacin sold under?
Indocin is a brand name of indomethacin, which is also sold as Indocap. Here, indomethacin can be bought online as generic Indocin, and also as indomethacin capsules. These are generics, not the original brand.
Can I take Indocin with food?
Yes. Indomethacin is easier on the stomach when it goes down with a meal, just after eating, or with an antacid. Food does not stop the capsules working, so if they leave you feeling sick or burning, eating something first usually makes the difference.
Can I drink alcohol with Indocin?
An occasional drink is unlikely to cause trouble, but heavy drinking while you are taking indomethacin makes bleeding in the stomach much more likely. If you are on a course for a gout flare, it is worth keeping alcohol light until that course is finished.
How does Indocin compare with ibuprofen?
Both are NSAIDs and work the same way, by cutting the body's production of the chemicals behind pain and swelling. Indomethacin is the one used for gout attacks and inflammatory joint conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis; ibuprofen is more often chosen for everyday aches, sprains and fever.
What is the difference between the 25mg, 50mg and 75mg Indocin capsules?
They are the same medicine in different amounts. Which strength is used depends on the condition being treated and on how much indomethacin is needed to settle it; the 75mg capsule is the highest of the three.
About Indocin
What Indocin capsules are for
Indomethacin, the medicine inside Indocin, belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — the same family as ibuprofen. It is used for joints that are painful, swollen and stiff: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine), plus bursitis and tendinitis in the shoulder. It also settles the pain and swelling of an attack of gout.
The capsules work by blocking the body's production of prostaglandins, the chemicals that switch on pain, fever and swelling around an inflamed joint. They are usually taken two to four times a day, with a meal or straight after one, at about the same times each day; an empty stomach makes nausea and indigestion more likely.
Which strength to choose
Indocin comes as capsules in 25mg, 50mg and 75mg, and packs run from 30 to 360 capsules. The strength is matched to the condition and to how the joints respond, so a gout flare and long-term rheumatoid arthritis may be handled differently; 75mg is the highest capsule available here.
Indocin is the brand name; Indomethacin capsules contain the same medicine in the same three strengths, so what differs is the name on the pack. The indomethacin page covers the ingredient in more depth.
Stomach and heart effects
Indigestion, nausea, stomach pain, headache and dizziness are the commonest complaints and often ease with time. The stomach needs the most watching, since indomethacin can irritate its lining and occasionally cause an ulcer or bleeding: black, tarry stools or vomit like coffee grounds need urgent treatment. As with other NSAIDs, there is also a raised chance of heart attack or stroke, so chest pain, breathlessness, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech is an emergency.
What to keep in mind
Heavy drinking while taking indomethacin makes stomach bleeding more likely. Blood thinners such as warfarin, aspirin and other NSAIDs, steroid tablets, and antidepressants of the SSRI or SNRI type all add to the same risk. Courses are often short, covering a flare while it settles; joint conditions that keep returning are sometimes treated over months.
