FAQ

What strengths and pack sizes of Levofloxacin can I order?

Levofloxacin tablets come in 250mg, 500mg and 750mg strengths. Packs range from 30 to 360 tablets, though 750mg goes up to 180 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

Which delivery option suits a long course of Levofloxacin?

For Levofloxacin, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days and includes online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, 30 at most, and is untracked. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents.

What is another name for levofloxacin?

Brand names for levofloxacin include Cravit, Levaquin, Levoflox, Oftaquix and Tavanic. Levofloxacin tablets are a pure generic levofloxacin product and are not any of those brands.

Does levofloxacin affect the pill?

Levofloxacin does not weaken hormonal contraception, so the pill, patch, ring and implant keep working. The one thing that can let a pill slip is a bout of vomiting or severe diarrhoea, because the tablet may not stay in long enough to be taken up, and that has nothing to do with the antibiotic.

What is the difference between the 250mg, 500mg and 750mg tablets?

The number is how much levofloxacin each tablet contains — the same antibiotic in three amounts. Which one is used depends on the infection being treated and how severe it is, so a higher strength is not automatically a better choice for every case.

How long does levofloxacin stay in your system?

Its half-life is about six to eight hours and the kidneys clear it, so most of a dose has left the body within a day or so. That is what allows one tablet a day to keep working around the clock.

Can I drink alcohol with levofloxacin?

Alcohol does not stop the antibiotic working, but it adds to the dizziness, lightheadedness and poor sleep the tablets can cause. A drink or two is unlikely to matter; a heavy night while you are fighting an infection is a different story.

About Levofloxacin

What levofloxacin tablets treat

Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic — a group that kills bacteria rather than merely holding them back. It is used for infections caused by bacteria: pneumonia and flare-ups of long-standing bronchitis, sinus infections, complicated urine and kidney infections, prostate infections, and infections of the skin and soft tissue. Viral illnesses such as colds and flu do not respond, and taking it for them only helps resistant bacteria take hold.

Tablets come in 250mg, 500mg and 750mg, in packs of 30 to 360 (the 750mg pack stops at 180). The strength you need and the length of the course follow the infection, from a few days for a simple one to a couple of weeks for a stubborn one.

What it does inside the bacterial cell

Bacteria copy their DNA with two enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, and levofloxacin blocks both. Unable to divide or repair themselves, the bacteria stop spreading, and the immune system deals with the rest.

Stopping the moment you feel better is the usual way a course goes wrong, because bacteria that survive can rebuild the infection. Levofloxacin is spaced 24 to 48 hours between doses, which for most people means a single tablet a day, swallowed with water whether or not you have eaten.

Tendons, nerves and other effects

Nausea, loose stools, headache, dizziness and trouble sleeping are the complaints that come up most, and they usually ease as the course goes on. Tendons — the cords that join muscle to bone — can become sore, swollen, or rarely tear, either during treatment or for several months afterwards, and the risk is highest over 60. A snap or pop in a tendon, bruising around one, or a joint that will not take weight calls for urgent treatment. Nerve damage is the other one to know: numbness, tingling, burning or weakness in the arms and legs, sometimes starting soon after the first tablets. Less common are seizures, confusion, hallucinations, sudden changes in mood, and severe allergic reactions — swelling of the face or throat, a spreading rash, difficulty breathing — which need emergency care.

Antacids and minerals

Antacids, and anything rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc or aluminium, bind levofloxacin in the gut and cut how much reaches the bloodstream. Leave at least two hours between your tablet and an antacid, a mineral or multivitamin supplement, or a milky drink.
