What you will receive
Minomycin is the originator brand name, made by Catalent. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Minomycin.
- The same active ingredient (Minocycline) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Minomycin strengths and pack sizes can I order?
You can order Minomycin as tablets in 50mg packs of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 240 tablets, and 100mg packs of 10, 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 tablets. It is generic minocycline, not the original Minomycin. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Minomycin delivered to Hong Kong?
Minomycin orders to Hong Kong can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, up to 30 at most, untracked, while tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents.
What are the alternative names for Minomycin and minocycline?
Minomycin and Minocin are brand names of minocycline, which is also sold as Amzeeq. Here, minocycline can be bought online as generic Minomycin, and also as generic Minocin. These are generics, not the original brand.
Should I take Minomycin with food?
It works either way, so a tablet can go with a meal or on an empty stomach. Food helps when a dose leaves you queasy. Whatever the timing, take it with a full glass of water, because a tablet that sticks in the throat can irritate the lining.
What is the difference between Minomycin 50mg and 100mg?
The number on the box is the amount of minocycline in each tablet, so 100mg holds twice what 50mg does. Both are plain tablets and both come in a spread of pack sizes. The higher strength is for when more minocycline is wanted in a single tablet.
Does Minomycin affect the contraceptive pill?
No. Minocycline does not make hormonal contraception less reliable; only enzyme-inducing drugs such as rifampicin do. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can still stop a pill being absorbed.
Can I take antacids or iron tablets with Minomycin?
Not at the same time. Antacids, calcium supplements and iron soak up minocycline in the gut, leaving less for the body to absorb. Leave 1 to 2 hours either side of your dose for an antacid or a calcium supplement, and 3 hours before or 2 hours after for iron.
How long does Minomycin take to work on acne?
Acne clears slowly rather than overnight. Expect a few weeks before the skin looks calmer, and a course that often runs for several months. Taking the tablets at steady intervals helps, and a course stopped as soon as the spots settle often lets them come back.
About Minomycin
What Minomycin tablets are for
Minomycin is minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic sold as plain tablets in 50mg and 100mg strengths. It is used for infections caused by bacteria, including those of the skin and the soft tissue beneath it, and it has a long record in acne and in rosacea — the facial condition behind flushing, redness and pimples.
The drug blocks the protein-making step inside bacteria, so they cannot grow and multiply. In acne it does a second job: it holds back the bacteria that live in blocked pores, and the skin makes less oil.
How to take the tablets
Take each dose with a good mouthful of water, and don't chew or crush the tablet. Food makes no difference — with a meal or between meals are both fine. Most courses are spaced twelve hours apart, though some are taken four times a day, six hours apart.
See the course through to the end of the pack even when your skin or the infection settles quickly. Bacteria that survive a short course can build up again.
Antacids, calcium supplements and iron tablets soak up minocycline in the gut, so less of it reaches the blood; the fix is to keep them well away from your dose.
What side effects to expect
Feeling sick, loose stools, an unsettled stomach, headache and light-headedness are the usual complaints, and most of them ease within a few days.
Take care with driving or machinery until you know how the tablets leave you; light-headedness is the reason.
The sun is harsher than usual while you take this antibiotic: a high-factor sunscreen, a hat and long sleeves help when you are outdoors.
After months of treatment a few people develop a blue-grey tinge in scars, gums or skin. It fades slowly once the tablets are stopped.
Tetracyclines are not given to children under eight or in pregnancy, where they can stain teeth that are still forming and affect bone growth.
Swelling of the lips, face or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing needs urgent treatment.
Choosing a strength and pack size
A 100mg tablet holds twice the minocycline of a 50mg one, and both are plain tablets. The 100mg pack starts at 10 tablets, which covers a short infection course. The 50mg pack runs from 30 up to 240, the sizes that suit acne, since it is usually treated over a longer stretch.
