FAQ

Which Minoxidil strengths and pack sizes can I order?

You can order Minoxidil as tablets in 5mg and 10mg packs of 30, 60, 90 or 120 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Minoxidil delivered to Hong Kong?

Minoxidil ships to Hong Kong in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, the order is refunded. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking.

What is another name for minoxidil?

Brand names for minoxidil include Loniten, Rogaine, Mintop, Regrow and Tugain. Minoxidil tablets are a pure generic minoxidil product and are not any of those brands. Here, minoxidil can also be bought online as generic Rogaine.

Is oral minoxidil the same as Rogaine?

Both use minoxidil as the active ingredient; the difference is how it reaches you. Rogaine is a liquid you apply to the scalp, while these are tablets you swallow. The tablets are used for high blood pressure and are also taken by mouth for hair loss.

Can I drink alcohol with minoxidil?

Alcohol makes minoxidil's side effects more noticeable. Headache, dizziness, a racing heartbeat and a sharper fall in blood pressure are all more likely after a drink, and the tablets can add drowsiness. Keeping alcohol to small amounts makes the first weeks easier.

Does minoxidil cure high blood pressure?

No. Minoxidil lowers pressure while you keep taking it, and pressure climbs again once the tablets stop, which is why treatment continues on days you feel well. A diet low in salt and regular activity help the tablets do their job.

Why is minoxidil taken with other blood pressure medicines?

On its own, minoxidil makes the heart beat faster and the body hold on to fluid, which can bring swollen ankles and a racing pulse. Pairing it with a diuretic (water tablet) and usually a beta blocker offsets both effects, so pressure falls without the heart working harder.

Does minoxidil make hair grow all over?

It can. Fine body hair on the face, arms and back often becomes longer, thicker or darker during treatment, an effect that shows on the scalp too and is the reason oral minoxidil is taken for hair loss. The extra hair tends to fade once treatment stops.

About Minoxidil

What minoxidil tablets are taken for

Minoxidil by mouth is a blood pressure medicine. It joins other blood pressure medicines when pressure stays high on a simpler routine — often a water tablet (diuretic) plus something to slow the heart. The tablets come in 5mg and 10mg strengths.

It is also taken by mouth for hair loss, a use that grew out of an effect people noticed while taking it for pressure: fine body hair turning longer, thicker or darker. As a pressure treatment minoxidil is a vasodilator — it relaxes the walls of blood vessels so blood moves through them more easily.

How the tablets work

Minoxidil relaxes the muscle in the walls of small arteries by opening potassium channels. The vessels widen, the heart pumps against less resistance and blood pressure falls. The body reacts to that fall by speeding the heart up and holding on to salt and water, so the tablets are usually combined with other medicines rather than used alone, and a racing pulse or puffy ankles are the effects to look for. Pressure stays down only while the tablets are taken, which is why the routine goes on when you feel well.

Taking minoxidil

The tablets are taken once or twice a day, and twice-daily doses are usually split between morning and evening. Swallow them with water, at a mealtime or between meals. They can cause drowsiness, so see how you react before driving.

Side effects worth knowing

The one people notice most is extra body hair — longer, darker or thicker fine hair on the face and arms as well as the scalp. Breast tenderness, headache, nausea and vomiting also turn up. Chest pain, or chest pain that gets worse, is a reason for urgent help, because minoxidil can make angina (chest pain when the heart muscle is short of oxygen) worse. A fast heartbeat, swollen ankles or feet, weight creeping up for no clear reason, a rash, breathlessness, dizziness and fainting are also possible. Minoxidil is not used with pheochromocytoma, a rare tumour of the adrenal gland, or after a recent heart attack.

Tablets or Rogaine?

Rogaine is minoxidil too, but it is a liquid applied to the scalp, with its strength given as a percentage. These are swallowed tablets in 5mg and 10mg. The rest of the range, in every strength and form, is on the minoxidil page.
