FAQ

What pack sizes of Mucopain tubes can I order?

Mucopain comes in 20% tubes, and you can order packs of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 tubes. Each page shows the price per tube in Hong Kong dollars, and the bigger packs cost less per tube.

How is Mucopain sent to Hong Kong?

Mucopain tubes can go by tracked courier, taking 5 to 9 business days with online tracking. The parcel is plain and unbranded, with nothing outside about the contents. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched.

What is another name for benzocaine?

Mucopain is a branded generic of benzocaine. Benzocaine is also sold as Americaine, Anbesol and Orajel. Here, benzocaine can be bought online as Mucopain. These are generics, not the original brand.

How long does the numbing from Mucopain last?

It starts working in under a minute and has usually faded within the hour. Saliva washes the gel off a mouth sore faster than it would come off skin, which is why people reapply it, up to four times a day.

Can I eat or drink after using Mucopain?

Yes, but give it a few minutes first and keep to lukewarm food and drink until normal feeling returns. Chewing while the cheek or tongue is numb makes accidental bites likely, and you will not feel heat properly.

Will Mucopain stop a toothache?

It will numb the gum surface around a tooth for a short time, which can take the edge off. It cannot reach pain that comes from deep inside a tooth, and it does nothing about decay or an abscess underneath.

Is Mucopain the same as lidocaine gel?

No. Mucopain's active ingredient is benzocaine, an ester anaesthetic, while lidocaine is a different type of numbing agent. Both are sold as mouth gels, but they are separate ingredients and not the same drug.

About Mucopain

A numbing gel for sore spots in the mouth

Mucopain is a gel with 20% benzocaine, supplied in tubes. Benzocaine is a surface anaesthetic: it deadens the nerve endings in the lining of the mouth where it touches and does little beyond that. It will not heal an ulcer or clear an infection. What it does is take the pain out of a sore patch for a while, so eating and talking stop being a chore.

The shop lists it for mouth pain, minor mouth irritation and sore throat. In practice that means mouth ulcers, a spot rubbed raw by a brace or denture, tender gums after a dental visit, and a scratchy throat.

Putting it on

Squeeze a pea-sized amount onto a clean fingertip or a cotton bud and dab it on the sore spot. Rubbing only spreads it around. Numbness comes on in about a minute, and the gel can go on again when the pain returns, up to four times in a day.

Say you dab the gel on a mouth ulcer and go straight to a hot cup of tea. You would not feel the heat, so wait until normal feeling is back. The same numbness makes it easy to bite your cheek or tongue without noticing. Put the cap back on after each use.

Use it for a few days at a time. A sore that is still there after about a week is not one this gel will fix.

Who should leave it off

Mucopain is not for children under two, and that includes using it as a teething gel. Anyone who has reacted to other ester-type anaesthetics such as procaine, or to PABA (an ingredient in some sunscreens), should avoid it as well. Stinging where it goes on is common and passes quickly. A rash, swelling of the lips or tongue, or skin and lips that turn pale, grey or blue means stopping the gel and getting urgent treatment; the benzocaine page explains the rare blood problem behind that last sign.

Choosing a pack

The strength is fixed at 20%, so the decision is how many tubes: packs run from one to five. Keeping a spare makes sense if ulcers or braces keep bringing the sore mouth back.
