What you will receive

Neoral is the originator brand name, made by Novartis. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Neoral.

  • The same active ingredient (Cyclosporine) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Neoral strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Neoral comes as 25mg and 100mg capsules. The 25mg packs run from 10 to 60 capsules, while 100mg packs run from 10 to 30 capsules. This is generic cyclosporine, not the original Neoral. Larger packs cost less per capsule.

How discreet is Neoral delivery to Hong Kong?

Neoral ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. If a parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, the order is refunded.

Does Neoral have other names?

Neoral and Sandimmune are brand names of cyclosporine, which is also sold as Cequa, Ikervis, Restasis and Gengraf. Here, cyclosporine can be bought online as generic Neoral, and also as Cyclomune and cyclosporine capsules. These are generics, not the original brand.

Can I drink grapefruit juice with Neoral?

No. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice slow the breakdown of cyclosporine, so more of it stays in the blood and side effects become more likely. This applies to the fruit, the juice and drinks made with it. Leave grapefruit out for the whole time you are taking the capsules.

Is Neoral the same as Sandimmune?

Both contain cyclosporine, but the formulations differ. Neoral is the modified type that forms an emulsion in the gut, so a given dose produces higher, more predictable blood levels than Sandimmune. That is why the two are not treated as dose-for-dose equivalents.

Why do I need blood tests while taking Neoral?

Cyclosporine has a narrow window between a useful level and a harmful one. Blood tests show how much is circulating and check kidney function and potassium at the same time. Results are used to fine-tune the dose, so the timing of the test matters — usually just before the next dose.

Does Neoral cause gum problems or extra hair growth?

Both are recognised effects of cyclosporine. Gums can become swollen, tender or prone to bleeding, and hair may grow more than usual on the face, arms and body. These changes are more likely at higher doses and often ease when the dose is reduced; careful brushing helps keep gums comfortable.

How is Neoral different from Cyclomune?

Cyclomune is cyclosporine in 0.05% and 0.1% eye drops for dry eye. It acts on the surface of the eye and very little reaches the bloodstream, so the kidney and blood pressure effects seen with swallowed cyclosporine do not apply to it. Neoral is taken by mouth and works throughout the body.

About Neoral

What Neoral capsules are for

Neoral is a brand of cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant — a medicine that calms an overactive immune system rather than fighting infection. It has two main jobs. After a kidney, liver or heart transplant it holds back the immune attack on the new organ, and it is usually given alongside other immunosuppressants. In rheumatoid arthritis it is used when other treatments have not done enough, to ease joint inflammation and limit the damage that follows.

How cyclosporine works and how it is taken

Inside T-lymphocytes (immune cells) a protein called calcineurin sets off the inflammatory response, and cyclosporine blocks it. Without that signal, a transplanted organ is less likely to be rejected and inflamed joints calm down.

Capsules go down whole with water; they are not chewed or opened. Doses are usually twice daily, morning and evening, at the same times. Pick one way to take them and stay with it, either always with food or always without. Blood tests then set the dose, measuring how much cyclosporine is circulating and how well the kidneys are managing.

Side effects to expect

Headache, shaky hands, nausea, tingling and extra hair growth are among the effects people notice first, and some settle as the body adjusts. Swollen, tender or bleeding gums are common with longer use. Blood pressure often rises and the kidneys can be affected, which is why levels and kidney tests are repeated. Cyclosporine leaves you more open to infections, and long-term use raises the risk of skin cancers and lymphoma, especially when several immunosuppressants are combined.

Foods and medicines that interact with Neoral

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice push cyclosporine blood levels up; St John's wort pushes them down. Levels also rise with ketoconazole and itraconazole (antifungals), clarithromycin and erythromycin (antibiotics), and the blood pressure medicines diltiazem and verapamil. Potassium-sparing diuretics and ACE inhibitors add to the risk of high potassium, and anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen and diclofenac put extra strain on the kidneys. Live vaccines do not belong with cyclosporine.

Neoral, Cyclosporine and Cyclomune

Cyclosporine capsules cover the same ground in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strengths — the 50mg option has no Neoral equivalent. Neoral comes as 25mg capsules in packs of 10 to 60 and 100mg capsules in packs of 10 to 30. Cyclomune is cyclosporine in a very different form: 0.05% and 0.1% eye drops for dry eye, acting on the surface of the eye instead of the whole body.
