FAQ
Which Ornidazole 500mg pack sizes can I order?
Ornidazole comes as 500mg tablets in packs of 30 to 120. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Ornidazole delivered to Hong Kong?
If your Ornidazole parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free; if that is not possible, the order is refunded. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days, or standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, 30 at most.
What is another name for ornidazole?
Brand names for ornidazole include Dazolic and Tiberal. Ornidazole tablets are a pure generic ornidazole product and are not any of those brands.
How long does ornidazole take to work?
Two to three days is typical before fever, pain or discharge begin to settle, though the infection being treated sets the pace. Feeling better early does not prove that every organism has gone, so the pack is meant to be used up.
What is the difference between ornidazole and metronidazole?
Both are nitroimidazoles and cover much the same range of gut, liver and genital infections. Ornidazole lingers in the body for longer, so a once- or twice-daily schedule is enough, while metronidazole often has to be taken three times a day.
Can I drink alcohol with ornidazole?
Not during the course, and not for three days after the last tablet. The combination can bring on flushing, a pounding headache, sickness and a racing pulse, sometimes within minutes of a drink, and it can leave you feeling unwell for several hours.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Take the tablet as soon as you remember. If your next dose is only a few hours off, wait and take that one instead; taking two together makes side effects more likely without clearing the infection any faster.
Does ornidazole leave a metallic taste in the mouth?
It can. A bitter or metallic taste is among the commonest complaints, often with nausea or a dry mouth, and it tends to fade within a few days. Sugar-free gum or sips of water between doses make it easier to put up with.
About Ornidazole
What ornidazole tablets are used for
Ornidazole is an antimicrobial of the nitroimidazole type — the same family as metronidazole. It works on two groups of organism: protozoa, the single-celled parasites behind several gut and genital infections, and anaerobes, bacteria that manage without oxygen.
Intestinal amoebiasis is the best-known target. The amoeba lodges in the bowel and brings on bloody diarrhoea, and if it reaches the liver the organ becomes tender and swollen. Giardiasis, caught from contaminated water, is treated too, along with trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection that frequently causes no symptoms. Away from parasites, ornidazole is used against anaerobic bacterial infections, some of which follow surgery.
How ornidazole works, and how a course is taken
Once inside a susceptible parasite or anaerobic bacterium, ornidazole is changed into reactive fragments that break up the organism's DNA. With its DNA damaged it can neither copy nor repair itself, so it dies out. Human cells make hardly any of this conversion, which is why the tablets mostly spare the person taking them.
Tablets are swallowed with water, with or without food. A few infections clear after one large dose, while most are treated with 500mg once or twice a day for five to ten days. Using up the pack matters, as organisms left behind by a partial course can start the infection again.
Side effects to expect, and ones that matter
Nausea, stomach pain and a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth are the usual complaints; headache, tiredness, dry mouth and mild dizziness can come along too. Most of these settle as the course continues.
Numbness, tingling or weakness in the hands and feet has been reported with longer courses and generally fades once the tablets are stopped. Swelling of the lips, face or throat, or a rash with trouble breathing, needs urgent treatment.
Alcohol, other medicines and storage
Drinking during treatment is a bad mix: flushing, a throbbing headache, vomiting and a racing heartbeat are the likely result. Blood thinners such as warfarin have a stronger effect while ornidazole is being taken, and the epilepsy medicine phenytoin can build up in the blood. Keep the strips in their original pack, dry and below 25°C, out of direct sunlight.
