Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine — an older kind that eases allergy symptoms and usually makes you sleepy. It is also an antiemetic (a medicine that calms sickness), settling a queasy stomach on a ferry as well as an itchy rash. Adults also use it for short spells of sleeplessness. How it works, and how to take it
