What you will receive

Plavix is the originator brand name, made by Sanofi. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Plavix.

FAQ

Which Plavix strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Plavix comes as 75mg tablets in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. It is generic clopidogrel, not the original Plavix. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Plavix delivered to Hong Kong?

Plavix tablets can go by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or by standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, untracked. Every order ships in plain, unbranded packaging.

Does Plavix have other names?

Plavix and Iscover are brand names of clopidogrel, which is also sold as Clopilet, Deplatt, Noklot and Pidogrel. Here, clopidogrel can be bought online as generic Plavix, and also as clopidogrel tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.

What is the difference between Plavix and clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel is the active ingredient; Plavix is a brand name it has been sold under, and Grepid is another. Both contain clopidogrel 75mg. This listing supplies generic clopidogrel tablets, so the name and the packaging are what differ.

Is clopidogrel a blood thinner?

It is often called one, but clopidogrel is an antiplatelet. Platelets are the fragments that stick together to start a clot, and clopidogrel stops them clumping. Blood thinners such as warfarin, rivaroxaban and heparin work on clotting proteins in the blood instead. The two groups are sometimes used together.

Can I drink alcohol with Plavix?

Alcohol does not change how clopidogrel works, so the occasional drink is not a problem. Heavy drinking is another matter: it irritates the stomach lining, and with clotting slowed that makes bleeding in the stomach more likely.

How long does clopidogrel stay in the body?

The medicine itself clears from the blood within about a day, but its effect lasts longer. Platelets that clopidogrel has affected stay that way until the body replaces them, roughly a week later, so the antiplatelet effect fades gradually after the last tablet.

About Plavix

What Plavix is for

Plavix is a brand name for clopidogrel, an antiplatelet medicine. Platelets are the small cell fragments that clump together to form a clot. Clopidogrel makes them less willing to stick, so clots are less likely to form inside arteries that have already narrowed. It is used after a heart attack or a stroke, in peripheral arterial disease (narrowed leg arteries that cause pain on walking) and after a stent is fitted into a coronary artery. When a stronger antiplatelet effect is wanted, it is taken alongside aspirin.

Taking your tablets

One 75mg tablet, once a day. Choose a time that fits your routine and stay with it. The tablet goes down with a meal or between meals — there is nothing to plan your day around. Clopidogrel does not act the moment you swallow it: the antiplatelet effect is fully built up only after a few days of steady dosing. If a dose slips your mind, take it when you notice, as long as the next one is not almost due. Do not take two tablets to make up for a missed one.

Bleeding, bruising and other effects

Slowed clotting shows up in everyday ways: bruises appear from knocks you barely noticed, nosebleeds come more easily, small cuts take longer to stop. Stomach ache, indigestion, diarrhoea and headache are also common and tend to ease as the body adjusts. Bleeding that is heavy or will not stop is a different matter — black tarry stools, blood in vomit or urine, or a nosebleed that keeps going need urgent treatment. Rarely, clopidogrel causes a blood disorder with fever, bruising, confusion and yellowing of the skin or eyes.

What does clopidogrel interact with?

  • Omeprazole and esomeprazole, common heartburn medicines, can stop clopidogrel working as well as it should.
  • Ibuprofen, naproxen and other anti-inflammatory painkillers raise the risk of bleeding in the stomach. Paracetamol does not carry that risk.
  • Warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban and heparin add to the effect, as do some antidepressants in the SSRI and SNRI groups.
  • Aspirin is sometimes taken with clopidogrel on purpose, for a stronger antiplatelet effect.
