FAQ
Which Pradaxa strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Pradaxa comes as generic dabigatran etexilate capsules in 150mg. Packs range from 10 up to 90 capsules. The pack contains generic dabigatran etexilate, not the original Pradaxa. Larger packs cost less per capsule.
How is Pradaxa delivered to Hong Kong?
Pradaxa goes to Hong Kong by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or by standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked. Order tracking is on the tracking page; support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat.
How does dabigatran compare with warfarin?
Both are anticoagulants, but dabigatran blocks thrombin directly while warfarin works on vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Warfarin needs regular INR blood tests to keep the dose in range; dabigatran does not, so kidney function is checked instead, since the kidneys clear most of a dabigatran dose.
Can I take ibuprofen with dabigatran?
Ibuprofen, naproxen and similar anti-inflammatory painkillers make bleeding more likely alongside dabigatran — they affect platelets and can irritate the stomach lining. Paracetamol does not add to the bleeding risk in the same way.
Can I chew or crush a Pradaxa capsule?
No — it has to go down in one piece. Breaking the capsule open and mixing the contents into food or a drink lets dabigatran into the bloodstream faster than intended, and that can make bleeding more likely.
What happens if I stop taking dabigatran?
The blood-thinning effect fades once the capsules stop, and the chance of a stroke or clot rises again without cover. Moving to another blood thinner keeps protection going without a gap.
About Pradaxa
What the capsules are for
Pradaxa is the name most people know dabigatran etexilate by, and the capsules sold here are the generic version at 150mg. The ingredient works as a direct thrombin inhibitor: it blocks thrombin, the enzyme that knits fibrin into the framework of a clot, so clots build more slowly and one already forming stops growing.
For atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat), the aim is to cut the chance of a stroke or of a clot forming elsewhere in the body. Other courses cover clots in the deep leg veins and in the arteries of the lungs — treating them and keeping them from returning — and the weeks after hip or knee replacement surgery.
Taking a capsule
Swallow a capsule in one piece with plenty of water rather than chewing, splitting or emptying it onto food — those change how fast the drug is absorbed. Doses are usually one or two a day, at set times.
Food is not a problem either way, though a capsule taken with a meal is easier if it brings on heartburn. If you remember a missed dose hours before the next one is due, take it then; if the next dose is close, leave the missed capsule out rather than taking two together.
Leave each capsule in its blister until the moment you take it, since damp air spoils them, and keep the pack away from warmth.
Bleeding and stomach effects
Bruises that turn up without a knock, small cuts that keep oozing, nosebleeds and gums that bleed when you brush your teeth are often the first signs. Indigestion, heartburn, stomach ache and nausea are common too, and usually settle as time goes on.
Some bleeding needs urgent treatment: bleeding that carries on, blood in vomit, stools that are black and tarry, red or brown urine, or coughing up blood. So do stroke warning signs — weakness or numbness down one side, a blinding headache out of the blue, slurred speech, sudden trouble seeing.
Mixing it with other medicines
Anything else that interferes with clotting adds to the bleeding risk: aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, heparin, and anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
Two others push the other way. St John's wort and rifampicin, an antibiotic used against tuberculosis, clear dabigatran from the body faster so it protects less well; ketoconazole and dronedarone slow that clearance, leaving more of the drug in circulation.
Who should not take it
A mechanical heart valve, badly reduced kidney function, or a bleed that is happening now are the situations where dabigatran is not used.
