What you will receive

Prometrium is the originator brand name, made by AbbVie. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Prometrium.

  • The same active ingredient (Progesterone) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Prometrium strengths and pack sizes are available?

Prometrium comes as generic progesterone capsules in 100mg and 200mg strengths. Packs range from 30 up to 90 capsules. This is generic progesterone, not the original Prometrium. Larger packs cost less per capsule.

How is Prometrium delivered to Hong Kong?

Prometrium is sent to Hong Kong in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Delivery is by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, up to 30, untracked.

What other names is progesterone sold under?

Prometrium is a brand name of progesterone, which is also sold as Crinone, Cyclogest, Endometrin and Gestofit. Here, progesterone can be bought online as generic Prometrium. These are generics, not the original brand.

Is Prometrium a contraceptive?

No. The capsules regulate the womb lining and support hormone replacement therapy, but they do not stop ovulation, so they are not a method of contraception. If you need to avoid pregnancy, that has to be covered separately.

How long does Prometrium take to bring on a period?

For a stopped period the usual course runs about ten days, and bleeding normally begins a few days after the last capsule rather than while you are still taking them. Courses taken alongside oestrogen for menopause symptoms run for as long as the oestrogen is used.

Can I drink alcohol with progesterone capsules?

Alcohol does not cancel the capsules, but its sleepiness adds to theirs. A single glass with dinner is unlikely to matter, whereas a heavy evening can leave you dizzy, unsteady or foggy by morning, which counts if you are driving or working.

What does micronised progesterone mean?

Micronised means the progesterone has been ground into extremely fine particles and suspended in oil inside the capsule. Plain progesterone is poorly absorbed from the gut, and the smaller particles plus the oil fill let more of it reach the bloodstream.

What if I miss an evening capsule?

Take it later the same night if you remember. If you only realise the next day, leave that one out and take your usual capsule the following evening — do not take two at once to catch up.

About Prometrium

Prometrium capsules, 100mg and 200mg

Prometrium is the name used here for progesterone capsules, sold in 100mg and 200mg strengths and in packs of 30 to 90. The progesterone inside is micronised, meaning ground into very fine particles, and sits in an oil-based fill so the gut can take it up.

The capsule replaces the body's own progesterone, the hormone that thickens the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) after an egg is released and lets it break down as a period when no pregnancy follows. In the years before menopause that natural rhythm drifts, and the capsules cover the shortfall.

Where progesterone capsules fit

Most people order these for one of two reasons. A woman on hormone replacement therapy takes oestrogen for hot flushes and night sweats, but oestrogen alone keeps building up the womb lining, so progesterone goes alongside it to make the lining shed. The second reason is a period that has stopped unexpectedly (secondary amenorrhoea) or bleeding that has become irregular, where a short course is meant to bring a bleed on.

Drowsiness and other side effects

Drowsiness and dizziness top the list, which is why most people swallow the capsule whole with water at bedtime, an hour or two before sleep, and sleep through the worst of it. Eating beforehand is fine. Until you know how a dose affects you, leave driving until the next day; the grogginess usually lifts within the first week or two. Headache, tender breasts, bloating, low mood and light spotting between periods are also common.

A clot is the rare problem to take seriously: pain or swelling in one calf, sudden breathlessness or chest pain needs urgent treatment.

What changes how well it works

If you take rifampicin or rifabutin (tuberculosis drugs), carbamazepine or phenytoin (epilepsy drugs) or St John's wort, the liver clears progesterone faster and each capsule may do less than expected. Heat is the other thing to avoid: the oil fill softens, so the bottle belongs away from sunlight and radiators.
