FAQ
What Raloxifene strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Raloxifene comes as 60mg tablets in packs of 10, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Raloxifene sent to Hong Kong?
Raloxifene tablets can go by tracked courier in 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, or by standard airmail in 14 to 21 business days, untracked. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours if not yet dispatched.
What are the other names for raloxifene?
A brand name for raloxifene is Evista. Raloxifene tablets are a pure generic raloxifene product and are not that brand.
Is raloxifene the same as hormone replacement therapy?
No — HRT uses oestrogen, which acts on the breasts and womb lining as well as bone. Raloxifene acts like oestrogen in bone but blocks it in breast tissue and barely touches the womb. It does not ease menopausal symptoms; in fact, flushing is one of its common side effects.
What is the difference between raloxifene and Evista?
Evista is the brand name; raloxifene is the medicine inside it. Both come as 60mg tablets taken once a day, so what differs is the name on the box.
How long does raloxifene take to work?
Think in months, not days. Bone density is usually measured again after a year or more of steady use, and the drop in spinal fractures shows up over years. Protection ends when the tablets do.
Does raloxifene cause weight gain?
Weight gain is not listed among the usual side effects of raloxifene. The ones women report most are flushing, flu-like aching and leg cramps, along with swollen ankles.
Who should not take raloxifene?
Women who have had a clot in a leg, lung or eye do not take raloxifene, and nor do women who could still become pregnant — it is meant for life after the menopause. It is also avoided in severe liver or kidney disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding or cancer of the womb lining.
About Raloxifene
What raloxifene is for
Raloxifene does two things, both after the menopause. It slows the bone loss that leads to osteoporosis — bones so thin that a minor knock can break them — and, for women at higher risk, it cuts the chance of developing invasive breast cancer (cancer that has broken out of the milk ducts into the tissue around them). It cannot treat a cancer that is already there, and it is not for women who are still having periods.
What a SERM does
Raloxifene is a SERM — a selective oestrogen receptor modulator. A SERM copies the hormone oestrogen in one tissue and blocks it in another. Here the copying happens in bone: the cells that break old bone down slow, and mineral density holds. In breast tissue the drug sits on the receptor without switching it on, so oestrogen's growth signal never reaches hormone-sensitive cells. The womb lining is left alone, which is raloxifene's main difference from oestrogen replacement. Fewer spinal fractures have turned up in trials; protection for the hip has not been shown.
One tablet a day
You take one 60mg tablet a day, any time, with or without food. It works slowly on bone, so it is a long-term medicine, and the benefit lasts only while you keep taking it.
If you also take calcium tablets, or an antacid containing aluminium or magnesium, leave about two hours between them and the raloxifene. They reduce how much of it is absorbed. Cholestyramine, a cholesterol medicine, does the same.
Side effects and warning signs
The risk to know about is a blood clot in a deep leg vein. Long stretches of sitting still, such as a long-haul flight or a day or two in bed, make one likelier. A calf that is hot, tender or puffy, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, blood in a cough or any sudden loss of sight all need emergency care.
Everyday effects are milder: hot flushes, leg cramps, swollen ankles, aching joints and a flu-like spell early on. Raloxifene can change how warfarin works, and stroke was more common in women who already had coronary heart disease or were at high risk of it.
Which pack size should I order?
There is only one strength, 60mg, so the choice is about pack size. Pack sizes run from 10 tablets to 360; a small one suits a first month or two, a large one suits someone settled on long-term treatment. Evista is the brand name for raloxifene; generic tablets hold the same 60mg of raloxifene hydrochloride.
