FAQ

Which Ropinirole strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Ropinirole comes as 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 2mg tablets, in packs of 30 to 360 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Ropinirole delivered to Hong Kong for a long course?

For longer Ropinirole courses, tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, while standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, 30 at most, and is untracked. Both arrive in plain, unbranded packaging.

What are the other names for ropinirole?

A brand name for ropinirole is Requip. Ropinirole tablets are a pure generic ropinirole product and are not that brand. Here, ropinirole can also be bought online as generic Requip.

How long does ropinirole take to work?

Expect several weeks. The dose rises in small steps until symptoms are controlled, and the steps come faster for restless legs than for Parkinson's: the first increase after two days, the next at the end of the first week, then weekly.

How does ropinirole differ from levodopa?

Levodopa is changed into dopamine inside the brain; ropinirole bypasses that step and stimulates the dopamine receptors itself. For Parkinson's disease it may be used alone or together with levodopa, and it has a second use in restless legs syndrome.

Can I drink alcohol with ropinirole?

Alcohol adds to the drowsiness and dizziness ropinirole can cause, and it can make the light-headed feeling on standing worse. If you do drink, keep it modest, especially while the dose is still being adjusted and you are learning how the tablets affect you.

Can ropinirole cause gambling or spending urges?

Strong urges to gamble, spend money, eat or have sex can develop on dopamine agonists such as ropinirole, sometimes in people who have never had them before. They can appear weeks or months into treatment rather than straight away, and they tend to ease once the dose is reduced.

About Ropinirole

What ropinirole is used for

Two conditions bring people to these tablets. Parkinson's disease damages the nerve cells that make dopamine, the chemical the brain relies on to control movement, and leaves the body slow, stiff or shaky. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is an uncomfortable creeping or crawling feeling in the legs with a strong need to move them, worst in the evening or at night while you sit or lie still. Ropinirole is a dopamine agonist, which means it does the job of dopamine at the receptors that would normally respond to it. It eases both conditions without curing them, and most people take it long term.

Ropinirole or Requip — which one?

Requip contains the same active ingredient, ropinirole, in the same four strengths: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 2mg. What differs is the name on the box — Requip is the original brand, ropinirole is the ingredient's own name. Both are standard tablets that release the medicine straight away; slow-release ropinirole tablets are sold under other brand names and are not part of this range. The ropinirole ingredient page covers both in more depth.

The first few weeks

Nobody starts on the final dose. Treatment begins small and rises in steps, so the early weeks are a search for the amount that holds your symptoms down. With restless legs the tablet is a single evening dose, one to three hours before bed. With Parkinson's the same tablets are spread across the day, often as three doses. A meal or snack with a dose can quiet nausea, though food is not needed for the tablet to work. Finishing treatment is gradual too: a sudden stop can bring fever, stiff muscles, sweating and confusion.

Side effects and things to watch

Nausea, dizziness, light-headedness when standing up and drowsiness are the usual complaints, and most settle as the body adjusts. Falling asleep suddenly during ordinary activities, sometimes with no warning at all, is a known effect, so hold off on driving or working at heights until you know how they affect you. Hallucinations and confusion can occur, more often in older people. Strong urges to gamble, spend, eat or have sex can develop weeks or months in, and they ease when the dose comes down. Antipsychotics and metoclopramide block dopamine and work against ropinirole.
