What you will receive
Tegretol is the originator brand name, made by Novartis. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Tegretol.
- The same active ingredient (Carbamazepine) at the same strength.
- The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.
FAQ
Which Tegretol strengths can I order?
Three strengths are listed, 100mg, 200mg and 400mg, and each comes in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. The tablets are generic carbamazepine rather than the original Tegretol; the price per tablet goes down as the pack size goes up.
Is the Tegretol parcel discreet when it reaches Hong Kong?
Yes. Every Tegretol order ships in plain, unbranded packaging, with nothing on the outside about the contents. Orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels. You can cancel within 24 hours if the order has not yet been dispatched.
What are the alternative names for Tegretol and carbamazepine?
Tegretol is a brand name of carbamazepine, which is also sold as Mazetol, Zeptol and Timonil. Here, carbamazepine can be bought online as generic Tegretol. These are generics, not the original brand.
How long does Tegretol take to work?
Trigeminal neuralgia pain often eases within a day or two. For seizures, expect a few weeks before the full benefit, with the strength raised in steps meanwhile.
Can I drink alcohol with Tegretol?
Alcohol piles onto the drowsiness and unsteadiness carbamazepine already causes, so one drink can hit harder than usual, mostly in the first weeks and after any increase. Many people avoid it altogether.
Does Tegretol make the contraceptive pill less effective?
Yes. The hormones in the combined pill, patch and ring are cleared faster when carbamazepine is in your body, so those methods protect less reliably during treatment and for a month after the last tablet.
What happens if I stop Tegretol suddenly?
Seizures can return, sometimes worse than before, so treatment is reduced in steps and not halted at once. Keep taking the tablets through a settled spell as well as a rough one.
About Tegretol
Seizures, facial nerve pain and mania
Carbamazepine is the active medicine in these tablets and in the Tegretol brand, and it belongs to the anticonvulsant group — drugs that calm the abnormal electrical activity behind seizures. It is used to control certain types of epilepsy and to treat trigeminal neuralgia (sharp, stabbing pain along a facial nerve). In bipolar I disorder it is used for manic and mixed episodes, the spells of abnormally excited or irritated mood. In seizures and mania it dampens over-active nerve signals in the brain; in trigeminal neuralgia it changes the way the body senses pain. It holds these conditions steady rather than curing them, and many people stay on it for years.
Starting low, building up
Tegretol tablets come in 100mg, 200mg and 400mg, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. Treatment begins with a small amount that is raised step by step, so the strength you start on is seldom the one you stay on, and the full effect can take a few weeks. Doses are spread over two to four times a day with food, which is why many people pin them to breakfast, lunch and dinner. A good spell is no reason to stop: coming off abruptly can bring the seizures back harder.
What you may notice at first
Drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea and blurred vision are the usual early complaints, and they tend to settle as the body adjusts. Taking each dose with food helps if your stomach is unsettled. Dry mouth, headache and a mild tremor also turn up. Alcohol adds to the sleepiness and unsteadiness.
Signs that need urgent attention
A painful rash, blistering or peeling skin, mouth sores or a fever during the first months of treatment needs urgent treatment: carbamazepine can set off a severe allergic reaction that damages skin and internal organs. It can also cut the number of blood cells, so a sore throat or fever that lingers, unusual bruising or bleeding, or tiny red or purple spots on the skin are signs to take seriously rather than wait out.
The pill, grapefruit and other medicines
Carbamazepine makes the liver clear many other medicines faster, and that includes the hormones in the combined pill, patch and ring, which protect less well during treatment and for about a month afterwards. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice raise the amount of carbamazepine in your blood, so it is simplest to leave both out. Other anticonvulsants, some antibiotics and some antidepressants push carbamazepine levels up or down, and it does the same to them in return.
