What you will receive

Trileptal is the originator brand name, made by Novartis. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Trileptal.

  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Trileptal strengths and pack sizes are available?

Trileptal pages cover 150mg, 300mg and 600mg tablets. Packs run from 30 tablets up to 360 for the lower strengths and up to 180 for 600mg. This is generic oxcarbazepine, not the original Trileptal, and each page shows the price per tablet in Hong Kong dollars.

What happens if a Trileptal parcel to Hong Kong goes missing?

If a generic oxcarbazepine parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, we send it again free; if that is not possible the order is refunded. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, while airmail takes 14 to 21 business days and is untracked.

What other names is oxcarbazepine sold under?

Trileptal is a brand name of oxcarbazepine, which is also sold as Oxetol. Here, oxcarbazepine can be bought online as generic Trileptal. These are generics, not the original brand.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Trileptal?

Drinking while you take oxcarbazepine makes the drowsiness and light-headedness more pronounced, and it can leave you unsteady on your feet. The effect is stronger in the weeks when the dose is still going up, so that is the point at which most people give alcohol a miss.

Can Trileptal make my birth control pill less effective?

Yes. Oxcarbazepine speeds up the way the body clears the hormones in combined pills, patches, rings and injections, so their protection can drop. Condoms or another non-hormonal method used every time is the practical answer, and it needs to stay in place for as long as the tablets are taken.

How does Trileptal compare with carbamazepine?

The two are close chemical relatives and both settle overactive sodium channels, so they cover the same partial seizures. Oxcarbazepine was designed as a version of carbamazepine that the body handles differently: it is a weaker inducer of the liver enzymes that clear other medicines, which is why it interferes with fewer of them.

Is Trileptal only used for epilepsy?

No — oxcarbazepine is also given for bipolar disorder, where stretches of low mood alternate with agitated highs. This use is much less common than the epilepsy one. The tablet behaves the same way in the body either way, and the strength is matched to the person rather than to the condition.

About Trileptal

What Trileptal tablets are for

Oxcarbazepine is the ingredient in these tablets, sold under the Trileptal name. It is an anticonvulsant — a medicine that lowers the chance of seizures — used alone or with a second seizure medicine to hold back focal seizures (those that start in one small area of the brain), in both adults and children, and sometimes in bipolar disorder.

How Trileptal is taken

Tablets come in 150mg, 300mg and 600mg strengths, taken morning and evening about twelve hours apart at the same times each day; whether you have eaten makes no difference to the tablet. Treatment starts low and builds up gradually rather than reaching the full amount straight away. Oxcarbazepine is a long-term medicine: it holds seizures back but does not cure epilepsy, and stopping it suddenly can bring seizures back harder, so the dose is reduced in steps rather than cut off.

What oxcarbazepine does in the brain

Nerve cells fire by letting sodium ions rush in through tiny channels in their walls. In a seizure, a patch of brain tissue fires over and over in a way that spreads. Oxcarbazepine and the breakdown product it turns into — the form that does most of the work — hold those sodium channels shut for longer, so repeated firing is harder to sustain and the abnormal electrical activity settles. That is why the effect builds with steady dosing instead of arriving after one tablet.

Side effects people notice

Dizziness, drowsiness, double or blurred vision, headache, unsteadiness, feeling sick and tiredness are the ones that turn up most, often in the first weeks while the dose is climbing, and they usually ease as the body adjusts. A less common problem is a drop in the sodium level in the blood, which can show as headache, confusion, weakness or a sudden rise in seizure frequency. A rash that spreads, blisters or comes with fever needs urgent treatment.

Interactions and storage

Hormonal contraception is the one to know about: oxcarbazepine can make the pill, patch, ring and injection work less well. Alcohol stacks with the tablets' sleepiness and dizziness. A few other anticonvulsants and some common medicines change how much oxcarbazepine stays in the body, and oxcarbazepine can do the same to them. Store the tablets in their original packaging, away from damp and bright light.
