FAQ
Which generic febuxostat strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Two strengths, 40mg and 80mg. Packs start at 30 tablets and go up to 180; the tablets are generic febuxostat, not the original Uloric, and buying the larger pack lowers what each tablet costs.
How does generic febuxostat reach Hong Kong, and can I track it?
You can choose tracked courier for generic febuxostat, which takes 5 to 9 business days and includes online tracking. Standard airmail takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, and is untracked. Every order arrives in plain, unbranded packaging.
What are the alternative names for Uloric and febuxostat?
Uloric and Feburic are brand names of febuxostat, which is also sold as Adenuric, Febustat and Febutaz. Here, febuxostat can be bought online as generic Uloric. These are generics, not the original brand.
How long does Uloric take to lower uric acid?
Uric acid levels begin to fall within days, and a blood test about two to four weeks after starting shows whether the dose is working or needs to go up. Gout attacks can still happen during that time, and it may take several months of steady treatment before they become rare.
Can I drink alcohol with Uloric?
Alcohol does not stop febuxostat working, but beer in particular is rich in purines and can push uric acid back up and trigger a gout attack. If you drink, keeping it occasional gives the tablet a better chance of holding your uric acid down.
What is the difference between Uloric and allopurinol?
Both lower uric acid by blocking the same enzyme, xanthine oxidase. Allopurinol is the gout medicine usually tried first; febuxostat is a once-daily alternative often used when allopurinol is not suitable or is not bringing uric acid down enough.
Does Uloric help a gout attack?
No — Uloric lowers uric acid over weeks and does nothing for the pain and swelling of an attack already under way. Flares are usually treated with an anti-inflammatory painkiller such as ibuprofen or naproxen, or with colchicine.
Can I stop Uloric when my gout settles down?
Stopping lets uric acid climb back to its old level within weeks, and crystals can start re-forming in the joints. Treatment is usually continued long term, even when joints feel completely fine.
About Uloric
What Uloric does in gout
Uloric's active ingredient is febuxostat, a tablet taken once a day to bring down uric acid — the waste product your body makes when it breaks down purines, compounds found in meat, seafood, beer and in your own cells. Too much uric acid in the blood (hyperuricaemia) lets sharp urate crystals settle in a joint, most often the big toe, where they set off the heat, swelling and pain of gout. Febuxostat blocks xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that produces uric acid, so less of it is made and the crystals already in the joints slowly shrink. It is not a painkiller and will not settle an attack that is already under way. It is also used to prevent the high uric acid that can follow chemotherapy for some blood cancers.
Uloric 40mg and 80mg tablets
Film-coated tablets come in 40mg and 80mg. Long-term gout treatment usually settles at 80mg once daily, and some people open on 40mg and move up if uric acid is still above target a few weeks in. One tablet a day with water does it; meals make no difference, so breakfast or bedtime is fine provided the hour stays the same.
Attacks may come more often before they ease
As uric acid falls, crystals sitting in the joints shift and dissolve, and gout attacks can become more frequent for the first few weeks or months. That is a sign the medicine is working on the crystals, not a sign it has failed. Uric acid is usually measured about two to four weeks after starting, and the dose changed if the level is still high.
Side effects, and keeping the tablets
Headache, feeling sick, loose stools, a rash and small rises in liver enzymes on blood tests are the effects reported most often, and for many people they settle as treatment continues. A rash that spreads, puffy lips or face, or difficulty breathing needs urgent attention. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pain under the ribs on the right can point to liver trouble. Keep the tablets in their original pack somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
