What you will receive

Viibryd is the originator brand name, made by Actavis. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Viibryd.

  • The same active ingredient (Vilazodone) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

What strengths and pack sizes does Viibryd come in?

Viibryd tablets come in 20mg and 40mg, in packs of 30 to 180 tablets. The pack contains generic vilazodone, not the original Viibryd. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

What happens if my Viibryd parcel goes missing?

If a Viibryd parcel does not arrive within the delivery window, or arrives damaged, it is sent again free. If that is not possible, the order is refunded. You can cancel within 24 hours if not yet dispatched. Support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat.

How long does Viibryd take to work?

Some people notice a shift in the first week or two, but for most the full benefit builds over several weeks of daily dosing. Vilazodone is taken every day rather than only on the days you feel low, because it is the steady level in the body that does the work.

Should I choose the 20mg or the 40mg tablets?

The usual adult dose is 20mg to 40mg once daily with food, and 40mg is the top of that range. Treatment is normally stepped up from a lower starting dose, so 20mg is the strength most people begin with; 40mg comes later if the effect needs to be stronger.

Does Viibryd cause sexual side effects?

Yes. Vilazodone is linked with lower sex drive, trouble getting or keeping an erection, delayed ejaculation and difficulty reaching orgasm, and these can carry on for as long as treatment does.

Can I stop taking Viibryd suddenly?

Treatment is wound down in steps rather than stopped overnight. Dropping the dose to zero in one go can bring dizziness, headache, irritability and disturbed sleep as the body readjusts, so the reduction is spread out instead.

Is Viibryd used for anxiety?

Not on its own: vilazodone is a treatment for major depressive disorder. Anxiety often travels with depression and the two tend to ease together as mood lifts, but it is not a fast-acting medicine for panic or a sudden anxious spell.

About Viibryd

What Viibryd is used for

Viibryd is the brand name for vilazodone, a tablet taken once a day for major depressive disorder in adults. That means low mood and loss of interest that last for weeks rather than days, and drag sleep, appetite and energy down with them. Vilazodone acts on serotonin, the messenger chemical involved in mood and sleep: it blocks serotonin from being cleared away between nerve cells, and it also attaches to one serotonin receptor (5-HT1A) and switches it partly on. That second action is what sets it apart from SSRIs, which only block reabsorption.

Taking vilazodone

One tablet a day, always with food — a proper meal rather than a snack. Food is not a small detail here: the tablet is absorbed far better with something in the stomach, which keeps the amount in the body steady. Choose a time you will not forget — breakfast or dinner — and stay with it. Doses are usually built up rather than started at the target: a low first dose, then 20mg, and 40mg only after at least another week. Keep the strips sealed until you need each tablet.

Side effects

Digestive complaints lead the list — diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting — along with trouble sleeping. They usually appear in the first week or two and settle as the body adjusts. Sexual effects are recognised too: lower sex drive, erection problems, delayed ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm. A few reactions are serious. Serotonin syndrome — a serotonin build-up — brings agitation or confusion, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, a racing heartbeat and fever, and needs urgent treatment; so does swelling of the tongue or throat, or trouble breathing. Vilazodone can also raise the chance of bleeding, switch someone with bipolar disorder into mania, and, rarely, cause seizures or sudden eye pain with blurred vision. Antidepressants such as vilazodone can increase thoughts of self-harm in people under 25, most often in the first few weeks.

Which medicines clash with vilazodone

An MAOI rules vilazodone out, both during treatment and for 14 days after stopping one. Tramadol, triptans and St John's wort also push serotonin up and add to the risk of serotonin syndrome. Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and warfarin make bleeding more likely. Ketoconazole, an antifungal, slows how fast the body clears vilazodone, and alongside it the daily dose stays at 20mg rather than rising to 40mg.
