What you will receive

Dexilant is the originator brand name, made by Takeda. We use it to identify the medicine; the pack you receive is a generic equivalent, not the original Dexilant.

  • The same active ingredient (Dexlansoprazole) at the same strength.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock when your order ships.

FAQ

Which Dexilant strengths and pack sizes are available?

Dexilant capsules come as 30mg and 60mg, each in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 capsules. The pack contains generic dexlansoprazole, not the original Dexilant. Larger packs cost less per capsule.

How is a large Dexilant order delivered to Hong Kong?

Very large Dexilant orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels. Each parcel ships in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. Tracked courier takes 5 to 9 business days with online tracking.

How long does Dexilant take to work?

Acid production drops within a day of the first capsule, but heartburn usually calms over several days of daily dosing. Where acid has already damaged the oesophagus lining, repair takes weeks rather than days, which is why erosive oesophagitis is treated with the higher 60mg capsule.

Can I take Dexilant at night?

Yes. Nothing about the capsule ties it to the morning, and food makes no difference, so you can take it at whatever hour suits you. What matters is keeping the time of day steady, because that is what holds acid down between doses.

What is the difference between Dexilant and lansoprazole?

Dexilant contains dexlansoprazole, one of the two mirror-image forms of lansoprazole, and both belong to the proton pump inhibitor group. The practical difference is the capsule, which lets the medicine go in two waves rather than all at once the way a standard lansoprazole capsule does.

What if I cannot swallow a Dexilant capsule?

Open it and tip the granules onto a tablespoon of apple sauce, then take the spoonful straight away rather than saving it. Do not chew, because the coating on each granule is what controls the release.

Can I drink alcohol with Dexilant?

Alcohol does not interact with dexlansoprazole, but it loosens the valve at the top of the stomach and irritates the lining, so a heavy night can still bring heartburn the next day.

About Dexilant

What Dexilant treats

Dexilant is dexlansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), one of the medicines that cut down how much acid the stomach makes. It is used for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the condition where stomach contents flow back up into the oesophagus (food pipe), and for erosive oesophagitis: the sore, stripped patches that repeated acid exposure leaves on that lining. Ongoing treatment keeps those patches healed. Heartburn that keeps returning with non-erosive reflux is the other common reason it is offered. Capsules come in 30mg and 60mg.

Taking a capsule

Pick a time that fits your morning or evening and use it every day; one capsule is the whole dose. Eating beforehand changes nothing. The capsule goes down whole, since the granules inside are coated to release at different points and chewing or crushing undoes that. For anyone who cannot manage capsules, the granules can be tipped onto a spoonful of applesauce and swallowed immediately, again without chewing. The pack should stay closed and cool until the next dose.

How the release works

Each capsule holds two sorts of granule, coated so that one lot dissolves early in the gut and the other further down. That spread-out release is what lets a single daily capsule hold acid down through more of the 24 hours than a plain delayed-release tablet. The medicine does not neutralise acid already in the stomach; it attaches to the acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining and switches them off.

Side effects and interactions

Headache, loose stools, belly pain, wind and sickness are the complaints that turn up most, and they often ease as the body adjusts. Swelling around the mouth, face or throat, or difficulty breathing, needs urgent treatment. A rash that peels or blisters, ongoing severe diarrhoea, muscle cramps or weakness with no clear cause, and a heartbeat that races all need checking. Stomach acid helps some medicines dissolve so they can be absorbed; iron tablets and antifungals such as ketoconazole and itraconazole can lose effect while you are on dexlansoprazole. Months of treatment can also lower magnesium and vitamin B12.

Dexilant 30mg and 60mg

Both strengths are delayed-release capsules of generic dexlansoprazole. The lower one, 30mg, is the strength for non-erosive reflux and for keeping healed oesophagitis from flaring again; 60mg is the strength used to heal erosive oesophagitis in the first place. Pack sizes run from 30 up to 180 capsules. The ingredient has its own page: dexlansoprazole.
