FAQ
What Disulfiram strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Disulfiram comes as tablets in 250mg and 500mg. The 250mg packs range from 30 to 360 tablets, while 500mg packs range from 30 to 180. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How is Disulfiram delivered to Hong Kong?
By tracked courier, 5 to 9 business days with online tracking, in a plain box with nothing outside about what is in it. Payment is by card on an encrypted page, or with Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Which brand names does disulfiram have?
Brand names for disulfiram include Antabuse and Esperal. Disulfiram tablets are a pure generic disulfiram product and are not any of those brands. Here, disulfiram can also be bought online as generic Antabuse.
How long does disulfiram stay in your system?
The effect outlasts the tablet by about two weeks. Disulfiram shuts the enzyme down for good, so the body has to build new enzyme before it handles alcohol normally again. Until then, even a small drink can bring on the reaction.
Can I drink alcohol-free beer while taking disulfiram?
No. Drinks labelled alcohol-free are usually very low in alcohol rather than completely free of it, and that trace can be enough to set off flushing, headache and nausea. Low-alcohol wine, kombucha, and sauces or desserts made with wine or spirits carry the same risk.
How does Antabuse compare with disulfiram?
Antabuse is a brand name for disulfiram, so the two listings hold the same drug in the same two strengths, 250mg and 500mg. Pack sizes are shown on each listing.
Does disulfiram stop you wanting a drink?
No, not directly. Cravings and drinking habits are left alone; the tablet works by making the first drink physically unpleasant. That is why it is usually paired with counselling or a support group.
Do I have to stop drinking before I start disulfiram?
Yes. The tablets are started after drinking has stopped, because the reaction can be set off from the first dose while alcohol is still in the body. Starting sober also means the first days on the tablets are not spent dealing with a reaction.
About Disulfiram
How disulfiram tablets work
Disulfiram is for someone who has already stopped drinking and wants a physical barrier in front of the first drink. Alcohol is turned into acetaldehyde in the body, and a liver enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase normally clears that. Disulfiram blocks the enzyme, so acetaldehyde piles up within minutes of a drink. The flushing, headache and sickness that follow make alcohol miserable. It does not remove the urge to drink. The tablet adds a consequence to the first sip, and staying sober remains your decision.
Taking disulfiram day to day
One tablet a day, in the morning, with water. The block on the enzyme lasts days rather than hours, so a missed tablet does not bring alcohol tolerance straight back. The listing offers 250mg and 500mg tablets. Store the pack away from children and direct sunlight.
When alcohol gets into the body
The reaction can start within minutes of a drink and often runs for an hour or more: flushing of the face and neck, a throbbing headache, sweating, thirst, nausea and vomiting, a fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, dizziness and blurred vision. How hard it hits depends on how much alcohol was drunk. Chest pain, difficulty breathing or fainting means the reaction is severe and needs urgent treatment.
Alcohol hides in more places than the glass: cough syrups, mouthwashes, tonics, vinegars and sauces, some desserts, and even low-alcohol or "alcohol-free" beer can carry enough ethanol to set it off. The sensitivity lasts up to two weeks after the last tablet, so the care has to continue after you stop taking them.
Side effects and interactions
Early on, drowsiness, tiredness, a metallic or garlic-like taste in the mouth, headache and a mild rash are the ones people notice most, and they usually settle. Reported less often are liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine) and nerve damage that shows as numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. Medicines cleared by the same liver enzymes, warfarin and phenytoin among them, can build up in the body while disulfiram is taken; metronidazole is not combined with it.
Disulfiram and Antabuse
Antabuse is the same medicine under its older brand name, also in 250mg and 500mg. Searching for either name leads to disulfiram; the packs differ in the name printed on them and in the number of tablets. The disulfiram ingredient page has more on the drug itself.
