Levitra is a vardenafil tablet for erectile dysfunction (trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex). Vardenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor. It works with arousal rather than causing it: sexual stimulation sends a signal that widens the blood vessels in the penis, and vardenafil slows the breakdown of that signal, so more blood stays in and an erection can build. On its own, with nothing arousing you, the tablet does very little.
Before sex: what to expect
An hour before is the usual timing. Food is not a barrier, though a rich, fatty meal can hold the effect back, so a lighter dinner may suit you better. One tablet in any 24 hours is the limit; a second dose will not improve the result and makes headache and dizziness more likely. A couple of drinks are usually harmless, but a heavy night can leave you light-headed and make an erection harder to get, which rather defeats the point. Tablets come in 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 60mg.
Side effects and interactions
The combination to rule out first is vardenafil with a nitrate, whether that is a chest-pain tablet, spray or patch or the recreational "poppers": together they can drop blood pressure sharply. St John's wort may weaken the tablets.

Sudden loss of vision, sudden hearing loss or ringing in the ears, and an irregular heartbeat are rare but serious. An erection that lasts beyond four hours needs urgent treatment, since the tissue can be damaged.
