Vardenafil for erectile dysfunction
Vardenafil treats erectile dysfunction (ED, difficulty getting an erection firm enough for sex) in men. It is a PDE5 inhibitor, like sildenafil and tadalafil. During sexual arousal the body releases a signal that relaxes the blood vessels in the penis; vardenafil slows the enzyme that breaks that signal down, so blood flow rises and an erection is easier to reach. Arousal is still required, and vardenafil does nothing for desire.
How vardenafil is taken
It is taken as needed, usually about 60 minutes before sex, and not more often than once every 24 hours. Meals do not block it, although a high-fat one may slow it down. Each tablet is good for an occasion rather than a day.
Side effects and interactions
Headache, flushing, indigestion, a blocked or runny nose and dizziness are the usual effects. Blurred vision or a blue tinge to colours can happen. If an erection stays beyond four hours, or sight drops suddenly and severely, treatment is urgent.
Vardenafil must not be combined with nitrates for chest pain, "poppers" and riociguat. It is also not for men with long QT syndrome (an inherited heart rhythm condition), and some antiarrhythmic drugs, alpha-blockers, antifungals such as ketoconazole and itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors and erythromycin change how it acts. Grapefruit juice is best kept out of the picture. It is a medicine for men only. Keep them dry and at ordinary room temperature.
