FAQ

Which Phenazopyridine strengths and pack sizes can I order?

Phenazopyridine tablets come as 200mg. You can order packs of 30 to 360 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.

How is Phenazopyridine delivered to Hong Kong?

Phenazopyridine parcels can be sent by standard airmail, which takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, and is untracked. Every order arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. Support answers 24/7 in English and Cantonese by live chat.

Which brand names does phenazopyridine have?

Brand names for phenazopyridine include Pyridium and AZO. Phenazopyridine tablets are a pure generic phenazopyridine product and are not any of those brands. Here, phenazopyridine can also be bought online as generic Pyridium.

How long can I take phenazopyridine for?

Two days is the usual limit. The tablets only quieten the symptoms, so if the burning and urgency are still there after that, the cause behind them needs a fresh look rather than more phenazopyridine. Most people stop as soon as the discomfort has gone.

Why does phenazopyridine turn urine orange?

Much of each dose leaves the body through the kidneys, and a large share of it passes into the urine unchanged. That dye is what colours the urine red-orange or brown. It is not a sign that anything is going wrong.

Is Pyridium the same as phenazopyridine?

Yes — Pyridium is a brand name for phenazopyridine. The listing on this page carries the same 200mg strength in the same tablet form, so the choice comes down to which name you recognise.

Does phenazopyridine affect urine tests?

It can. The colour it puts into the urine interferes with dipstick readings such as glucose and ketone tests, so a sample taken during a course may need a different testing method to give a clear result.

Can I take phenazopyridine with antibiotics?

Yes. They do different jobs: the antibiotic clears the infection while phenazopyridine eases the burning and urgency until it takes hold. Both can be taken on the same days.

About Phenazopyridine

What the tablets do

Phenazopyridine is a urinary analgesic: a painkiller that works on the lining of the urinary tract rather than throughout the body. It dulls the burning when you pass urine, the nagging need to go again, and the urgency that makes a urinary tract infection so wearing. Bladder surgery, an injury or a procedure such as cystoscopy (a camera look inside the bladder) can leave the same raw feeling, and the tablets help there too.

It is not an antibiotic and will not clear an infection on its own. Most people take it alongside one, for the day or two before the antibiotic brings the symptoms under control.

Taking the 200mg tablets

Swallow one tablet whole with a full glass of water, three times a day after meals. Chewing or crushing is best avoided — the dye can stain your teeth — and taking the tablets with food keeps stomach upset to a minimum.

Relief is meant to be short-lived. Once the burning and urgency have settled there is nothing to gain from carrying on, and a course is not intended to run past two days.

Orange urine and other everyday effects

Red-orange or brown urine is the change almost everyone notices. It comes from the drug leaving the body through the kidneys and is harmless, though it can stain clothing, so contact lenses are best left out while you are taking it. The colour lasts as long as the tablets do and fades afterwards. Headache, dizziness and an upset stomach are the other common complaints.

When something more serious appears

Very rarely the drug causes problems that need urgent treatment: yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, confusion, a bluish or purple tinge to the skin, breathlessness, a rash, swelling of the face, hands, feet or legs, or a sudden fall in how much urine you pass. People with kidney disease do not take phenazopyridine, because the kidneys are how it leaves the body.

Phenazopyridine and Pyridium

Pyridium holds the same active ingredient, phenazopyridine, at the same 200mg strength and in the same tablet form. Both are 200mg phenazopyridine tablets; the difference is the brand name on the pack. Keep the pack closed and out of children's reach.
