The usual reason to buy it is acid that keeps coming up: heartburn, a sour taste, acid reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, GERD). It is also used where that acid has left the food pipe inflamed and sore (oesophagitis), and to stop the problem returning once it has healed. A third group are adults who take anti-inflammatory painkillers long term and need protection against ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It blocks the pumps in the stomach lining that make acid, so there is less to rise.
Taking the tablets
Most people take Protonix at breakfast: one tablet, swallowed whole with water, a little before they eat. Chewing or crushing it wastes the coating, which is there to get pantoprazole past the stomach acid. Whether the course lasts a few weeks or many months depends on the problem being treated. Side effects
