FAQ
What Pyridium strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Pyridium comes as 200mg phenazopyridine tablets in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 360. It is generic phenazopyridine, not the original Pyridium. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How discreet is Pyridium delivery to Hong Kong?
Pyridium tablets are sent in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing on the outside about the contents. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on a secure, encrypted payment page, or by Bitcoin or Ethereum. Card details never reach the shop's servers.
What other names is phenazopyridine sold under?
Pyridium is a brand name of phenazopyridine, which is also sold as AZO. Here, phenazopyridine can be bought online as generic Pyridium, and also as phenazopyridine tablets. These are generics, not the original brand.
Is Pyridium an antibiotic?
No. Phenazopyridine is a urinary analgesic, so it eases the burning and the constant urge to go, but it does not kill the bacteria behind a urinary tract infection. Where an infection is confirmed, an antibiotic clears it while Pyridium keeps the symptoms manageable in the meantime.
Can Pyridium stain my clothes or contact lenses?
Yes. The orange-red urine can leave marks on underwear and bedding, and staining of contact lenses has been reported with phenazopyridine. The colour itself is harmless and disappears a day or two after the last tablet, but light-coloured fabric and lenses can pick it up while it lasts.
What happens if I take Pyridium for longer than two days?
Two days is the limit when the symptoms come from a urinary tract infection. Past that, an antibiotic on its own does the same job, and the blood, kidney and liver problems linked to phenazopyridine are mostly seen with long or heavy use rather than a short course.
Can Pyridium affect a urine test?
It can. Phenazopyridine is an azo dye and interferes with urine tests that rely on colour or spectrometry, so a sample taken during a course can give misleading readings. The effect passes once the drug has cleared from your system.
About Pyridium
What Pyridium does
Burning when you pass urine, a nagging urge to go again straight away, a heavy ache low in the belly: that cluster of symptoms is what Pyridium is bought for. It is a urinary analgesic, which means it settles pain coming from the lining of the lower urinary tract rather than treating the cause. Irritation like this can follow a urinary infection, a catheter, bladder surgery or an endoscopic look inside the bladder.
Swallow the tablet and it is absorbed, carried to the kidneys and passed out in the urine. As it travels through the bladder and urethra it touches the irritated lining and dulls the pain signals there, and most of a dose leaves the body in the urine unchanged. Bacteria are not killed by it, so a confirmed infection still needs an antibiotic to clear.
Taking the tablets
Pyridium arrives as 200mg phenazopyridine tablets. One tablet three times a day with meals is the usual adult dose, and the relief is described as prompt. When the symptoms come from a urinary tract infection, two days is as far as it goes — past that point an antibiotic alone does the same job. After a procedure or a catheter it is taken only until the soreness settles. Keep the pack cool and dry, out of direct light.
What to expect while taking it
Your urine turns orange or red, and that colour is the drug leaving your body rather than blood. It fades within a day or two of the last tablet. Headache, an upset stomach, a rash or itching are the reactions reported most often. Blood effects — methaemoglobinaemia, where red cells carry less oxygen, and haemolytic anaemia, where they break down too early — have been reported, usually with higher doses, along with kidney and liver effects. A yellow tinge to the skin or the whites of the eyes means the drug is not being cleared as it should be.
Phenazopyridine is not used by people with poorly working kidneys, or by anyone who has reacted badly to it before.
Pyridium or phenazopyridine?
Both listings carry 200mg phenazopyridine in tablet form: this one under the Pyridium name, and Phenazopyridine under the ingredient name. Same strength, same ingredient, same kind of tablet; what differs is the brand name on the pack.
